Academy Awards 2024 - 96th ceremony - Watch Along Thread

And wow. Ended before 10:30pm Eastern time. I remember when it wasn’t over until close to midnight, which made it hard to watch on the East Coast.

I agree. Little fanfare. No lead up. No reminder of who is nominated.

There was more fuss about Al Pacino.

He just walked up, popped the envelope and read the winner.

I fully support starting this thing at 7 Eastern.

I have a feeling he was supposed to say more. Maybe not read the names again but more. He was certainly supposed to announce it with the trademarked phrase.

As a side benefit to the number of awards won by “Poor Things”, I happily imagine thousands of people queuing that movie up for an evening of family movie watching. “I heard it won a bunch of Oscars!”

He’s now what, 0-for-11? 0-for-12?

Won’t they will be very surprised?

LOL! Serves 'em right if they’re not familiar with Yorgos Lanthimos. I wasn’t, either, until seeing Poor Things and then his two prior films. Kinda like sitting the family down for a viewing of Debbie Does Dallas, on the basis of enjoying travelogues and presuming that Debbie will show us some nice places to visit in Dallas.

Al was a bit off.

“My eyes see Oppenheimer,” was a very strange way to announce it. The crowd kind of sat the for a few moments before realizing that was the actual winner for sure.

Wasn’t Leonardo DiCaprio famous for being nominated but never winning? (I think he finally won one)

For people like them I think, at the least, they can expect a lifetime achievement award a few decades from now.

Which reminds me…was there a lifetime achievement award tonight? (I missed some parts)

My first impression was that he sounded like a hacky stage magician about to do an Is-This-Your-Card reveal: “Might I see Oppenheimer?”

“From the trailer, it looks like its the adventures of an eccentric girl in Victorian England. Let’s watch this instead of The Railway Children.”

Poor things!

This Twitter post by The Hollywood Reporter includes a clip starting with Al Pacino’s weird announcement of the Best Picture winner, in case you missed it.

TCM recognizes talent. The Oscars scores their Q-Rating, with a ceremony similar to the Solid Gold Dancers in The Running Man every time Arnold killed one of the stalkers.

Peter O’Toole was nominated 8 times over 44 years, without winning. He was awarded a lifetime achievement Oscar in 2002, and asked the Academy for more time to “win the lovely bugger outright”.

I thought Downey had won for Chaplin, but I just checked; Al Pacino won Best Actor that year for Scent of a Woman.

And doesn’t that seem like a long time ago.

So what was the official run time? I did not see the beginning. Seems to me they streamlined the broadcast by eliminating the honorary Oscars. In years past they emphasized the importance of the humanitarian and honorary awards. Now they are given away off air.

That’s one of the factors that gets them off the rails sometimes. This year, I’m happy to say, even if some of the major winners wouldn’t have been my #1 choice, they were a close second. I think the Academy did good.

Regards,
A cranky old fart who almost always objects to some of the winners.

Started at 4pm Mingo mean time, and was done at like 740ish? I stepped out of the bar to get a shawarma near the end and it was done when I got back to the bar.
