Accidentally putting glue in one's eye: does that really happen?

In what world do people keep eye drops next to superglue???

I did ask an ophthalmologist if he ever encountered this and he said yes. And it’s easy to deal with. I did not ask for specifics.

I have nearly done that myself when I left it on the bathroom counter, so I’m sure many others have actually done it. I’ve also almost brushed with triple antibiotic cream, too.

I would absolutely believe that such mix-ups happen once in a while, not just with eyes but with things you put in your mouth. Haven’t we had a thread or two where people shared their experiences of that sort?

As for me, I’m pretty sure I’ve told the story where I put shoe polish all over my nose.

If you are wondering how that happened, the answer is that my dad worked in pharmaceuticals and as a result had constant access to small foil packs of alcohol-soaked antiseptic pads. We had a basket under the sink where he would toss handfuls of them. The same basket was where other convenient little foil packets were kept - for example, pads of neutral shoe polish intended for travelers.

When I was a teen at the height of my facial grease production, I went on a three-day camping trip. I knew that three days without access to any way to wash my face was going to be absolutely horrible for my skin, so I grabbed a handful of the alcohol pads to degrease my face. Or anyway, I thought that’s what I grabbed.

Or pre-literate! The cases of this that I heard about back in my hospital-pharmacist days involved young children.

How long did it take to wear off? Gentian violet stains EVERYTHING.

However, since it has an antiseptic action, it probably COULD be used as deodorant.

Hence the scream. We were horse girls and knew about gentian violet (which is generally only used on fungal infections these days). Time is different when you’re twelve, I would say it took a long time.
