Achilles' Tendon Growth

In October I avulsed my Achilles’ tendon from its origin at the calcaneus. The orthopedist inserted a titanium screw in the calcaneus and sewed the tendon to that. Unfortunately, the sutures did not hold and two weeks later I underwent a revised surgery wherein the orthopedist put in another screw, sewed the tendon to each, and then snipped the halucis longus brevis tendon from its insertion at the big toe and also sewed that to the Achilles.

Apparently the Achilles will grow new tissue along the sutures and eventually the new tissues will give adequate support. How does the tendon cause additional tissue to develop? Also, is it possible that the tendon will eventually reattach to the calcaneus directly (as it was originally). I believe the bursa sac at the end of the tendon remained intact, and could that be useful in causing a reattachment?
