Acronyms in common use with multiple meanings

BTS can be either a South Korean boy band, or the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Once the band hit it big it made it impossible to Google the government agency just using their acronym. I’m not sure if the name of the band stands for anything in particular, so I suppose it may not technically be an acronym.

At one point there was a rumor/conspiracy theory circulating among right wingers that Black Lives Matter was responsible for setting some wildfires in the western US. The most likely explanation is that someone was listening to a radio scanner and overheard some firefighter mention something about a fire set by the BLM, as in a fire set by the Bureau of Land Management as a controlled burn, and misunderstood the acronym.

Besides PhD for Piled higher and deeper (post 47 or so), it’s also for Post Hole Digger.

A FQ thread on railroads just mentioned CTE, which isn’t Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, the football disease, but Coefficient of Thermal Expansion.

I’m accustomed to the letters PTO being used to mean “paid time off”. But based on how that acronym is being used on the school sign across the street I’m guessing they also stand for “Parent-Teacher Organization” (Which I assume must have replaced the PTA).

Famously, for a long time WWF stood for both the World Wrestling Federation and World Wildlife Fund, until the wildlife charity was granted an exclusive trademark, and the wrestling organization changed its name to the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment).
