Acronyms in common use with multiple meanings

Heh. I remember that as Random Problem Generator.

CPAC = Canadian Parliamentary Affairs Channel. CBC = Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Both of these have different meanings in US political discouse, which comfused me mightily when scanning US headlines back before the last US electiopn.

The first time I recall this happening to me was when I overheard two people talking about the new, faster-than-dialup DSL service.

Damn. In the IT field, CBT is commonly used to refer to computer-based training. I guess I need to stop using this acronym.

I knew a girl that I went to high school with who posted something about “joining the WBC”. I wondered why she’d joined Fred Phelps’ cadre.

Turns out WBC also stands for Wisconsin Badger Camp, a summer camp for the mentally disabled.

My bank used to be called Washington Telephone Federal Credit Union. Very commonly referred to as WTF Credit Union.

They changed their name to SFF Credit Union last year. Nothing especially rude jumps out at me when I see SFF, but maybe we can come up with something.

No mention of Point of Sale terminals yet? The best thing is when they break down you can beat up on them and call them god damned lousy POS terminals with a straight face.

Around here it would be Thousand Oaks. And another regional one: SLO (San Luis Obispo) (thus giving my renfaire guild the mildly funny name of SLO Peasants), can also be, well, apparently a bunch of things.

(PS - post 11!)

I swear there are some other fandom ones that always give me double takes. Oh, there’s ROTJ which can be Return of the Jedi or Return of the Joker (both starring Mark Hamill =^_^=).

OT can also be Off-Topic.

TRD- Toyota Racing Division. Is a graphic seen on many Toyota trucks.

Sometimes I get confused and mistake a Toyota for a Ford Cause in my mind I read it as “turd”.

This was very confusing for me when I worked IT for a bank and one of my projects was to upgrade the ATM network to ATM.

From what I’ve heard, FTW used to stand for Fuck The World. Most people these days know it as For The Win!

There was a story a couple years ago about a woman who was annoyed by the new lingo and how it has caused problems with the DMV and liscense plates.

She had had the same liscense plates " WTF" for years, standing for Wilson (whatever) Tree Farm" and was not allowed to have it anymore because of its newer hipper edge.

ATA also stands for American Travel Agents.

Well, AWB is just my parents-given initials: Anthony William B_______.

In the 16 years since the OP, AWB has acquired a new meaning for me, “AutoWikiBrowser”.

I know I’m replying to a 16 year old post, but since this thread has been bumped anyway, SWF is also Stewart International Airport in New York (I know, not technically an acronym).

Some others I didn’t see in my quick scan of this old thread:

AA = Alcoholics Anonymous or American Airlines
STI = Sexually Transmitted Infection or Subaru Tecnica International
ABC = Either the American or Australian Broadcasting Company depending on where you are
BBC = British Broadcasting Company or Big Black… something NFSW. You can probably guess what the C stands for.

I did a search for this very topical one, and didn’t find it, but apologies if this is a repeat:

ICE has two often-used meanings: internal combustion engine, and immigration (and) customs enforcement.

It’s British Broadcasting Corporation.
fwiw

When the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests began I wondered what the Bureau of Land Management had to do with any of it.

And oddly, right-wingers have problems with both.

That’s the same one I was going to mention when I saw this thread bumped.

Another one I’ve encountered lately is CSA, which is very popular among left-wing liberal hippie types. At least, when it stands for Community-Supported Agriculture; not so much when it’s the Confederate States of America.
