Charlotte Rampling was mentioned in a GQ thread. Now objectively, she is an excellent actress and a very attractive woman. But it’s hard to me to accept either of these, because the first time I saw her was on “Georgy Girl” as Lynn Redgrave’s roommate. Her character was so repulsive to me that it’s hard for me to enjoy anything she does. Are there any actors who you have a dislike for based on just one acting role?
I have a hard time liking Burn Gorman, because of Owen Harper on Torchwood. (Granted, the other roles of his I’ve seen are the stick-up-the-ass Gottlieb in Pacific Rim and the actively evil Stryver in Dark Knight Rises…still, I wouldn’t have been so viscerally annoyed by them if not for Owen…)
Jude Law. I think I’m getting over it but he was such a whiny twat in Closer that I can’t take him seriously any more. And it’s not right because on an objective level, I realize I feel that way because he did such a good job playing a whiny twat.
I need to respond to the OP’s post about Charlotte Rampling.
The first time I saw her was in the movie The Big Sleep (1978) starring Robert Mitchum. It is a great film and has held up very well after all these years. I thought Charlotte was extremely sexy and gorgeous and had the most beautiful legs I had ever seen. I had many very pleasant dreams about those legs. Unfortunately, the next time I saw her was in the film The Swimming Pool in which she had aged a great deal and was no longer the same sexy beautiful young women.
In the past, when I have posted these kinds of opinions, they seem to draw a great deal of unpleasant responses. But look, it’s not my fault she aged. It happens to everyone. At any rate, aside from being a gorgeous and sexy woman in 1978, she was and still is a great actor and I’ll happily watch any film she is in.
I can’t agree with the OP. My opinions of her are not based on a single role and I can’t imagine why I would ever want to form an opinion about an actor based on a single performance. IMO, that is just foolish.
Oops. I was mistaken. The film was not The Big Sleep but was Farewell My Lovely.
Jeremy Irons in “Dungeons & Dragons.” I happen to catch it on cable one night way back when. Since then, it seems he’s overacting in every role to where I want to laugh when he tries to say something with force or emotion.
Derek Jacobi as his role as a very bad actor on an episode of Frasier. Ever since then I’ve thought of him as being a very bad actor. I still suspect I’m right, even though I am aware of being unfairly influenced.
^ We’re probably not supposed to do this here, but give Derek Jacobi another chance. Check out Kenneth Branagh Shakespeare films he’s in. You’ll admire how such a talented actor could make himself so awful on that Frasier episode.
You have to worry about Amy Adams; I hear she ages too.
Ranjit Chowdhry in a whole run of movies through most of the 1990s; in Mississippi Masala, The Perez Family, Fire, and Kama Sutra, Ranjit played the same role: annoying twerp. A little of that goes a long way, and I came to dread if Ranjit was going to show up and sour the mood as was his specialty.
Finally he broke that streak and got a role in which he was actually tolerable: philosophical sidewalk artist in Such a Long Journey—caught me by surprise.
Yeah, +1. Derek Jacobi is one of the greats.
Mickey Rooney in *Breakfast at Tiffany’s. *Not that I was much of a fan previously, and things back then weren’t considered offensive . . . but still . . .
Pierce Brosnan as Crown whatever Affair.
Adam Sandler- Waterboy (he had a couple hickups but… )
Sean Connery- League of Blah Blah Gentlemen
I wouldn’t know good Shakespeare from atrocious Shakespeare, so that wouldn’t help. But I’ve seen him in a bunch of things here and there and he doesn’t strike me as being all that impressive, really.
Kevin Bacon convincingly portrayed a pedophile in 2004’s The Woodsman. Every time I’ve seen him since, I can’t help being repulsed and thinking him a sick fuck.
You’d hate Sleepers.
I’ve seen it and you are correct.
Watch Jacobi in I, Claudius and you’ll change your mind.
Prior to Claudius (a true work of art!), he had had minor supporting roles in Day of the Jackal and The ODESSA File. He can play just about any part.
It took me years to get to where I could see Gene Hackman as a good guy after the first Superman. Granted I was quite young when it came out and it was the first film I saw him in. Now I think he’s great.
