Not in Game of Thrones? I don’t even remember him being in The Dark Knight Rises. But it was a disappointing film.
I was amused to discover today that he’s playing Alfred in Batman v Superman.

Well I think that the first few roles that I saw Dustin Hoffman in, as a child, were Dick Tracy and Hook. I’d also heard about Ishtar, which I knew to be a movie about a stand-up comedian. So between all of that, my impression of him was that he was a comedic actor.
I remember watching Hero and Outbreak and thinking, “He should go back to comedy”, before finding out that he was famously a dramatic actor.
I didn’t really have an opinion on Nicole Kidman before Eyes Wide Shut. After that I can only see her as a terrible actress. I think that movie also soured me on Tom Cruise forever.
Zooey Deschanel in Winter Passing. There was a scene I found reprehensible. I actually walked out of the movie that I was watching in my own living room, I went and cleaned my kitchen and left my boyfriend to finish watching it. I always thought she was a crunchy granola type and would have enough say as the star of the film to object to the scene. I don’t care if it was to show how broken her character was, I found it an unnecessary depiction of animal cruelty. I wasn’t a huge fan of hers before this but I lost any respect or interest in her as an actress after that.
The scene
She had a sick kitten with feline leukemia, she had taken it to a vet but it wasn’t getting better. She talked on the phone with the vet, euthanasia was discussed. Then she had to go visit her father so she put the kitten in a duffle bag and dropped it off a dock into the water. She could have taken it back to the vet but no, she chose a cruel method to end the kittens life. It would not have been quick, the kitten would have died in terror. If it was a money thing she could have taken it to a shelter for euthanasia.
Fish Called Wanda made me despise Kevin Klein.
Disappointed!
I had the opposite reaction to him from the movie.
You know that was just a role, don’t you? I’m pretty sure Zooey Deschanel doesn’t do that sort of thing in real life. If you had a problem with that scene, I’d say take up with the director or screenwriter (especially if they seemed to be suggesting this was a sensible solution to the character’s problem).
Tommy Lee Jones in Coal Miner’s Daughter. He plays Loretta Lynn’s husband. They married when she was 14 and knew nothing about sex. He basically rapes her on their wedding night and isn’t very patient or understanding afterwards. Didn’t help that I was only 15 when I saw the movie.
I’ve never been comfortable with him.
I liked Zooey Deschanel until she broke poor Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s heart in (500) Days of Summer. I cannot forgive her for that!
Also I don’t know how to pronounce her name. Is it ZOO-ey or ZO-ey? Is it DESS-Chanel, DAY-Chanel or DEZ-Chanel? (I am pronouncing the Chanel part like Coco Chanel, not like “channel.”)
I’ve had trouble warming up to Meryl Streep since I watched The Devil Wears Prada. She was too good at being a hard-ass.
I have had a deep and abiding ick for David Thewliss after Total Eclipse.
Judith Anderson playing Mrs. Danvers in Rebecca. After that, she was dead to me.
I really hated the character Ted on Six Feet Under, who was Claire’s boyfriend near the end of the series. As a result, I have a lingering—and probably unfair—dislike for Chris Messina.
Mark Harmon. I love him. But he played Ted Bundy in The Deliberate Stranger. His performance creeped me out. It was so good, for about two years I couldn’t watch him in anything.
Yes, I know. Did you realize that this thread is about roles that soured you on an actor? Everyone else told their stories about actors playing a role, mine is no different. The screenwriter and directors are the ones who put the stuff into the movies, same as with all the other actors mentioned. So why is no one else’s opinion wrong?
Also, it was not a sensible solution to the character’s problem, if they wanted to show how broken the character was, there were other ways without resorting to animal cruelty. So yes, the main fault was the writer’s but this thread is about actors and that role soured me on her and I still think she could have objected and had it changed.
You’re not talking about her role, you’re talking about her choices as an actress. Nobody thinks Mark Harmon or Kevin Bacon are bad people because of the roles they played so well, but you’re implying Zooey is a bad person because she didn’t fight the director to change the role to your liking.

I’m confused. What does the actress being a crunchy granola type have to do with it?
I thought this was a thread about roles that rubbed off on your perception of other roles played by an actor? You seem to be saying that your perception of the actor’s real life personal moral character turned you off on her as a person, kind of how like some people harbor resentment towards Jane Fonda.
The thread title is “Acting role that soured you on an actor” and the op said this
So, I guess, you can take it either way. I believe a couple other people have said certain roles soured them on the actor, not just their subsequent roles.
I was not implying that she is a horrible person. She may be the most wonderful person in the world and I am sure she doesn’t actually drown kittens in real life however, I have no interest in going out of my way to watch her in anything now because of that role. Which I feel is right in the theme of this thread. Also, at the time, I believe she was a vocal vegan and I would have expected that she might make other choices with regards to acting roles and representation of treatment of animals in her movies, and because of that I found myself disappointed in her in general.
Let’s debate it over a keg of beer then.
Nicholas Cage in every movie he’s ever been in.
