I’m watching MSNBC and they were just showing a WCSH reporter doing an on the spot piece, wearing a fleece with the channel logo and an LL Bean logo and it just hits further home because that’s the thing my department did at LL Bean - Business to Business, aka, wholesales garments with logos embroidered on. They’re all on lock down up the street from Walmart right now.
So they found the vehicle in Lisbon.
Which is just a firmly arched piss from Lewiston, but still quite a few miles from an interstate.
Not a suspect! Person Of Interest!
What Bullshit.
They just had some talking head on CNN going on about how he must be heading to Canada. If the shootings were in Lewiston and his car is found in Lisbon, he’s not heading toward Canada. That would be like saying the shooting was in Los Angeles and they found his car in San Francisco, so he must be heading for Mexico.
Currently one medical helicopter in the area. Probably more earlier.
Make that 2. 1 medical and 1 NH state police.
The medical helicopter is making a bee-line for Bangor Maine. The State Police helicopter is circling south of Lisbon. Police helicopter circled about 10 times and was 500 off the ground at one point. It has since moved on…
They’re saying on the news that he spent 2 weeks at a mental institution for hearing voices and had also threatened to shoot up a National Guard unit,
The people in the Lisbon area have to be freaking out over the helicopter circling the area. It’s still going on in a fairly tight area.
I’m listening to this guy on MSNBC who is theorizing what this guy might be up to. One option is he might be dead, which would be optimal, but another theory is that he is moving and looking for the next target that consists of a gathering of people. From Lisbon, that means Brunswick (where I used to live) is next, then probably Freeport and then Portland where the softest targets are. This worries me.
The helicopter has been circling Lisbon for over an hour.
I had the news on and heard of the shootings and the name of Portland was mentioned. I froze because I have a nephew in Portland Oregon. Then Maine was identified and I was relieved, but now feel guilty for feeling that way.
Don’t be - it’s a perfectly normal reaction. Besides, just because you care about people you know, that doesn’t mean you don’t care about people you don’t.
It’s just heartbreaking. This man was known to have mental issues and had already threatened to kill and yet he still had access to this fucking killing machine.
It sounds like a lot of the victims were young as they were having an event for youth at the bowling alley. God Damn, I fucking hate it here.
Moderating:
Just a reminder that political jabs aren’t allowed in breaking news threads
And a reminder that emotions can run high when things like this are happening. Remember to be kind to your fellow dopers in this thread.
Those restrictions would not help much. There are so many weapons available that it should not be any problem for a person to make a straw purchase at a gun show.
First we need to ban these weapons. Then offer some dollar amount for turning them in. Then keep collecting them when found. Gun ranges need to be under inspection. Lovely job. Who would take it? Who would work for the ATF?
Moderating: please take gun control policy suggestions to another thread. You can discuss how this person was able to get which guns, or other stuff specific to this incident, here. But gun control talk is bound to hijack the thread.
We have friends up in Augusta. Lewiston is the most random place on Earth. It looks like a significant city on the map, but it’s 99% residential; it’s not just a crossroads, but it’s not really all that much more than that, either. It’s a half mile of Main Street America straddling the Androscoggin River. If you were driving all the way to the northeastern end of I-95, Lewiston would likely be your last gas stop.
It has a college, a couple of hospitals, and a newspaper. But yeah, that was my thought, too. It’s kinda no place in particular.
That’s a little exaggerated (you still have to go north to hit Bangor and I-95 goes all the way to Houlton), but “random” is good descriptor. It’s a stop on the river system. The only industry is warehousing - and going to church.
