Ad-busters and the new S/W

Here’s one that I’m sure you’ll love.

Connecting through a proxy that is set to remove ads, InterQuick 2.1.0.0 (using the latest version of the database of what is an ad), the topic titles on the forum screen are removed by InterQuick. Interquick thinks that they’re ads!

Except for the announcement at the top. That title comes through.

InterQuick is at [url removed by TubaDiva]

And now you’re having problems with your webwashing software?

Man, that is just awful.

And you want us to fix this?

It’s not a bug, it’s not a problem. Well, it’s YOUR problem.

It’s not like we’re throwing nag screens at you or making you click through 97,000 windows to exit or anything. We’re really not intrusive.

I’m gonna remove your link, too, do this on your own site.

Filing this under “too bad.”

A bit testy, aren’t we? Well, I can understand that you’ve got lots of important things to worry about.

No. Did my message give you any indication that I wanted or expected you to change anything? I intended it as informational only.

If someone posts a message or sends you or vBulletin’s techs a message saying that they can’t see thread titles, are you going to ask if they are using any ad-busting software? Would you have asked that question if I didn’t post my message? Well, maybe you would, but I thought that I had a piece of information which might be useful to you and vBulletin. I passed that information along.

I posted a message to the developers of InterQuick about this. If anyone is to take action, they are the ones to do it.

FYI, I almost always connect without going through the InterQuick proxy. I’m just playing with it as part of testing Wingate 4.0 beta. My only real interest is in its pre-fetching of web pages, and I’m not even very interested in that (since I have 768/384 ADSL). It just happens that I set up Interquick to bust ads (just to see what happened), and I set up one profile of Netscape (one of eight profiles, and I almost always use Opera) on one computer (one of five computers) to go through InterQuick to see how it worked, and I happened to use that copy of Netscape on that computer to see if I could post here. It was pure happenstance that I noticed the problem and diagnosed it. I fixed it here by setting that copy of Netscape to go direct to the Internet; as I said, I don’t care much about InterQuick.

Short version: you came along at a point when I had about one good nerve left and this thread pretty much killed it. So I got snippy. Sorry.

Anyway, to answer your question from before, yes, there IS a bug in the software regarding Opera. (It also affects some Netscape users and WebTV folks as well.)

vB says they’ll have fixes for all these things, which will be incorporated into the next update, which will be out in the next few days.

Once again, this is all new software and will take some debugging and we need information from our users to find them all.

Ultimately it’s gonna be a better experience for everyone.

No sweat. I’ve been moderating/sysopping in one place or another around 15 years now; I know what it looks like from your side.

On the Autodesk-sponsored newsgroups (AutoCAD and related subjects), we just switched from newsreader-only access to newsreader/web access. There was a period of about 1.5 weeks when messages were multiplying themseleves on the server, some up to 50 times. There were some user complaints … {grin}.
