It is absolutely and unquestionably true that we don’t know if the letter exists. He didn’t say that the letter doesn’t exist, he didn’t say that it does exist, he only said that we don’t know. That much is true.
It is also absolutely and unquestionably true that we don’t know what the letter says, if there is a letter.
It is this insistence by you that there must be something to this, absent any provided evidence and based only on the sister’s allegation and lawsuit, that makes me believe that you have pre-judged him as probably guilty. There may, in fact, be something to this, or there may not. Nobody knows, and that includes you.
I don’t think this is a valid comparison, and you’re being somewhat disingenuous in this comparison. For Adam Savage, we have fundamentally a statement from his sister (who would have direct knowledge if it happened), Adam (who would have had direct knowledge if it happened), and his Mother (who has knowledge of both party’s character but no direct knowledge theoretically). We have a reported but not provided letter that his sister says documents evidence but has not been provided. We are currently at a “he said/she said” stage of affairs and most everyone has been careful to point it out.
For Trump, we have ‘transcripts’ (yes I know, not a true transcript), statements from multiple partisan and non-partisan persons with direct knowledge, and pattern of actions and evidence that make it an act of belief, not fact, to excuse him. In fact, pretty much even the Republican Senate admitted that his actions were crimes, were done in bad faith, but did not meet the standards they chose to employ for ‘High Crimes and Misdemeanors’.
So lets stick to accurate comparisons and the facts when and if we get them.
If…and again I say IF…AS is guilty of these charges then how is his character better than Trumps? What do we really know about the private life of Adam Savage? I hate to be forced into playing devils advocate. But the way so many dismiss as out of hand her charges without any evidence bothers me. The least we can do is keep an open mind and wait to see how this unfolds. We wont know anytime soon. Some of the responses in this thread are why many women will not come forward. Not only isnt she not believed, she is being dismissed.

Yes he deserves the presumption of innocence. But presumption is not actual innocence. I have never once in this thread said he actually did this. What I have said is that we have to take the accusation seriously and hold off taking a position of guilt or innocence until the facts are in. We dont know if there are other accusers just because they havent been made public. We dont know the extint of the mental illness of the accuser because we havent seen her psych evals. But I will not outright dismiss her claims because 1) She is emotionally disturbed nor 2) It happened 40 years ago.
In other words, you made up a fact, and are defending it because, being ignorant of any details, it could conceivably be true. Did Savage skip a grade?
And, originally you said “5th grade”, now you’ve moved your fake fact to “5th or 4th grade” to cover the fact that you were obviously wrong in your initial assertion without having to admit that you made shit up.
By the way, a quick glance at Wikipedia indicates that Savage turned 18 the summer of his high school graduation, so he turned 9 the summer before 4th grade.
Why did you feel the need to make up a false fact about what grade Savage was in at the age of nine?
And, to get off of your made up false fact for a moment, I have to ask: assuming he did sexually assault his sister when he was 9 and ongoing for a number of years, who benefits from killing Adam Savage? Is society safer? Are 9 year old rapists going to think a little harder before they assault their sisters in the future? What, I ask, is the point?
Starting a conversation with calls for extreme punishment (if the person is guilty) is not “taking the accusations seriously and investigate further,” it’s obsessing on the presumed guilt of the accused. #metoo does not say “kill everyone who sexually assaults anyone, especially if the person was a child when they did it!”
No one in this thread (maybe I missed it) has said “don’t investigate or take the accusations seriously.”
Do you even know what these words mean? “Presumption of innocence” means we withhold judgment until evidence is presented, but that he gets treated as if he is innocent until evidence proves otherwise. It does not mean anyone is saying he definitely is innocent, full stop.
And yet you can’t stop hammering away at all the remotely possible (but as yet unknown) scenarios that would mean he is probably guilty.
No-one, literally no-one (except, arguably, you) is questioning this principle.
We don’t know if she has been infected by alien parasites. We don’t know if she even has psychiatric evaluations, and they probably wouldn’t be required for a civil trial anyway. In any case, what makes you think any of us would be allowed to invade her privacy in that way?
