As loath as I am to add yet another tale of computing woe to the tide behind me, I find myself stumped. Shortly (a day or two) after installing and then immediately uninstalling some third-party software I found that my control panel “Add or Remove Programs” now fails to start. When I try it returns the error message: “Value creation failed " at line 472”. I can then press ok, and experience no other ill effects. Note that the quotation mark in the error message is not a typo on my part; I suspect that it may have been intended as a pair of apostrophes to enclose some value that returned null.
I am reasonably certain that the cause is not a virus or other nasty, as Norton AntiVirus is fully updated and auto-protecting. I also availed myself of the other tools, such as the Disk Doctor and WinDoctor, which found nothing amiss.
So, any ideas?
