adding new smilies

Cool! Where and when do we vote?

Man! Great submissions so far!

I knew Smashie would a submission. I just knew it…

And I’m gonna have to vote against that one just on principle…

So Arnold Winkelried, are there going to be any specific criteria for the voting besides just voting for any we like? From the looks of the submissions, there are going to have to be some mini-polls to prevent duplication. For instance, the two ‘yuk’ smileys, the two ‘evil’ smileys, and opinion might be divided between the ‘pirate’ and ‘hijack’ smileys. Is there going to be a limit to how many will be added? I can see a lot of people just voting ‘yes’ across the board.

Great, great artwork so far.

Arnold -

Since many people have sent suggested smilies over the past couple of years, they should be included now in your considerations.
They are collected at this site
** http://www.geocities.com/proposedsmilies/ **
I’m guessing there’s no need for each person to email you again? You should be able to recover them all directly.

Hope to see some new smilies. I think the interest them is more sustained than you imagine.

AHunter3 - The original idea was to start a poll in IMHO after the end of the submission period. However I might end the submission period early when we reach 50 submissions.

White Lightning - the idea is not to add a whole bunch of smilies at once, but one at a time at periodic intervals. Since we’re only adding one smiley there will be no fear of duplicates.

tshirts - No need to make the link that big, my eyesight is still fine. Not all the smilies on that page fit our criteria. E-mail me the ones you want to submit for the poll.

Hey, Arnold, would it be possible to nominate the “green guy” smilie as seen on the cover of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy books? I don’t know if copyright or trademark issues would apply with that one, but it’d be kinda cool, I think.

Oh, I love the tinfoil hat.

If anyone has any ideas for smileys but lacks the time or talent to draw them, I’d love to try my hand at it, even though I don’t have any clever ideas. Anyone? Thanks.

Tuckerfan - if you want to propose that smiley, it would be up to you to investigate the copyright issues.
Achernar - Polycarp has proposed a “tongue-in-cheek” smiley.
There have been a few new submissions since my last post. I think I will end the submission period early if we reach 50 proposals before the 24 May 2002.

By all means shrink the link if you want to. It was inadvertant. (I keep forgetting that my “Accessibility Options” override, so my largest and smallest fonts are nearly the same (huge) size. You see, not all of us are blessed with your sound eyesight. )

I will email everything that doesn’t blink and fits the correct size constraints. Although that does cut out the ones sdimbert and I made specifically for you. Not to mention the ones I helped Chronos make.

I see number 4 is called ‘Crushed’. How about changing the name to ‘Gotchya Ya’ …jus fer ol’ times sake ?

OK, the Marlo Thomas one is funny.

Pity it’s not shown trying to host Free to Be You and Me.

How about a “Pedant” smiley? It would get lots of use, what with all the grammar- and spelling-Nazis, etc.

It could be a smiley wearing a mortarboard.

How about we just keep that webpage going and, any time we need a smilie we just say “oh yeah? Well #23!” and link them up?

I gotta say, the foil and dubious (5 or 30) would probably get the best usage as shorthand for expressions I often encounter (or desire to express—“hmm… I don’t know” doesn’t do the expression justice, and saying “dubious” can sound, well, out of place sometimes).

Whoosh… eh. It goes on enough, but I think smileys were often used to express ideas and expressions not easily expressed in text. “whoosh” in type seems to serve things well enough, no?

Laughing smiley is very nice looking, though. Better than the big grin IMO, and I usually end up using the tongue smiley :stuck_out_tongue: to express “punny” laughter.

I love smashie, but not because it expresses any particular sentiment that I would associate with. He is just a cool little guy. :slight_smile:

Just so you know, I’ve reached the number of 50 so the submission period is now closed, earlier than I thought. Those of you that had some cool ideas for the future, thank you and you can always try to resubmit later. I’m going to ask my fellow moderators to review the submissions, and I plan on scheduling the poll for Thursday morning in IMHO. Check ATMB for further details.
The first 50 submissions

Bummer, I was going to suggest an Og Smash smilie. :frowning:

That’s like the joke where prisoners tell the same jokes so often they use numbers? Then the new con yells out “#23!” but no one laughs. “What, wasn’t #23 funny?” he asks the lifer, who replies “It’s great kid, but some can tell them and some can’t.”

Actually, using just the “text to replace” is how people do some of the harder to draw “emotions” now:

::giggles::
::grrrowlll::
::ducks and runs::
::gets the vapors and faints dead away::

Okay, so I sat down to draw a tongue-in-cheek smiley, but I realized I don’t know what that’s supposed to look like. I don’t even know what tongue-in-cheek means. I did an image Google search for “tongue in cheek”. The only facial expressions in the first 140 hits are the following:

Am I on the right track?
