Ads are playing automatically.

Ok, sorry. I don’t have this issue, and I assumed the comment about removing the plugin was accurate. mea fucupa.

Staying away is one solution—although I would personally take some pleasure in seeing my cat’s reactions to a feminine hygiene ad!

I guess I’m stumped as to why enabling AdBlock is not a preferable solution.

Nonetheless, the fact that thread continues demonstrates that my ignorance is not an indication that some issue does not exist. That ignorance does make it difficult for me to envision any solution though.

I guess there’s nothing left but to wait for TPTB to dismantle a system whereby they make money off of your visiting.

You answered this same exact question a few months ago in this thread. Your response then:

and your follow up here:

So, this is nothing new, and you’ve already said that nothing is going to be done about it.

It problem seems to be resolved, at least, for me.

SiXSwordS, it was kinda comical, but as old as she is, I’m afraid she’ll have a heart attack or stroke. Theyalmost gave me one!

I use Firefox and adblock and it’s not because of the annoyance of the ads but because I was tired of the malware that locked up my computer every 2-3 months. Last one was the FBI moneypak. Blocking the autoplaying ads is just a happy consequence of that.

This is true … but on the offchance that maybe management would do something different I reported it.

I have not heard back.

Just started for me yesterday. And I tend to have multiple threads open, so often three or four ads are playing at once. If I Arrrrgggh! One page’s ad restarted while I’m typing this! Now I have to hunt through all the tabs, scroll up to the top of each page to find the ad, and keep clicking on Pause until it does.

This sounds like the guy explaining how he cut off his finger. “All I did was touch it like – Hey! There goes another one!”

But yes, I’m also getting ads that suddenly start playing again in pages that have been minimize, silent, and inactive for long periods of time.

Those ads suck balls and annoy the piss out of me.

But not enough to install Adblock.

FYI for the powers that be: the ads stopped playing automatically a few days ago. No longer a problem on my Mac.

I’m still getting them though. It’s been happening all over the place, for what it’s worth, with the Dope being a relative latecomer. It must be a change at one of the ad syndication services rather than a change of syndicates here.

I’m still getting them and when one finishes the next one starts automatically. Sucks.

Just got a bunch in a row. It wouldn’t be so bad if all of the tabs played at once so I could tune out for 30 seconds and be done, but they go one after another! I’ve heard the same ad for Delsym start maybe 10 times?

I don’t mean to pile on the admins, I’m sure they’re trying to resolve the situation. I just felt like kvetching.

To add something productive: it helps when I open a bunch of tabs to then go to the task manager and kill the Flash plugin when the pages are loaded. That stops most of them.

For those of you who do not use AdBlockPlus to prevent all ads, including sound ads, why is it that you chose not to use it?

I should also point out that subscribing members do not get ads. You also receive our thanks and whatever little extras we can throw your way. Perhaps not as much as we might like but as much as we can manage right now. So for $14.95 a year you get no ads and gratitude for being a foot soldier in the war against Ignorance.

For some of you that’s not doable. Whatever your reason, that’s okay too.

I have an exception for the Dope set on my AdBlock. The Dope has given me a lot of value over the years, and I’m happy to throw back whatever value the boards get from the ads.

Because I occasionally peruse the board from my work computer, where I can’t install new software without an extensive business case yadda yadda yadda. Mostly I just turn the sound off.

It seems a bit illogical to show ads to people who may not have the ready funds to contribute, but not show ads to those who do.

Not using AdBlock is how I noticed the problem, but “people using the site should change their behavior” is not really an appropriate response to “the site is doing something unacceptable,” especially when there’s plenty of people just passing through who may or may not be using AdBlock, but sure as hell aren’t posting in the thread. Here’s an extreme hypothetical: SDMB is hacked and installs a virus on people using IE on Windows 8. The response isn’t “Why are you using Windows when MacOS is clearly superior,” it’s “oh shit we’ll get that fixed.” For what it’s worth, the admins are all saying the latter.

And yeah, I’m definitely planning to get more aggressive adblockers now that ads are getting more aggressive, but until now the basic stuff has worked well enough for me.

So you’re drinking the ®Delsym?

No one has to, but AdBlock accepts donations.

Hmm—I’m guessing you know that AdBlock is not software per se. And maybe you are not able to add add-ons.

I started to work on a greasemonkey-style script until I realized that some people won’t take a solution for an answer.
