Adult Dopers, what are your guilty (chidish) indulgences?

All of ‘em. Crayons, eating ice cream out of the carton, cartoons, Sesame Street, clay, beads, bubbles, fingerpaints, kids’ books, Disney movies, singing in the shower and/or car at the top of my off-key lungs (also included in this is acting out commercials and pretending to be a rock star on stage), staying up late when I’m not supposed to, comic boks, matchbox car races and playing in the mud.

I’m 38, female.

Female, 23 years old.

Childish indulgences include: Play-Doh, coloring books and crayons, stickers, building forts out of Yaffa blocks, fingerpaints, the Mr. Sketch smelly markers, Dr. Seuss, any sort of toy (I have a whole desk drawer devoted to them), nail polish, and going to toy stores and pushing all of the buttons on all of the display toys that make noise.

I’m 20. I still sleep with a teddy bear :).

Does my candy and chocolate addiction count?

If not, what about my habit of eating all the chocolate from the outside of chocolate bars, before eating the center?

31 y.o male here

  • I still love all the old school stop action Christmas specials like Rudolph and what not.

  • I could eat Cocoa Pebbles every day of the week, I think

I’m sure I’ll be discovering many others I’ve forgotten now that I’ve got a 3 month old daughter. At least I can say I “have” to watch/play/eat whatever it is because of her!

Thirties.

Anything Star Wars.
Uresei Yatsura, and a handful of other anime series & films.

I like Playdough, and will shamelessly spend too much time with my friends’ kids in order to indulge that one.

I recently discovered the 1975 Fantastic Four radio series, narrated by Smilin’ Stan Lee and featuring Bill Murray as Johnny Storm. Somehow, it cracks me up everytime he says “Flame on!”. Hysterical. I tell myself I can get away with this because I missed it when I was five, although I was regularly exposed to Bill on Saturday Night Live from 1977 on, and I’ve grown out of that.

Mhendo, the chocolate skin thing works best with Aero bars. In Canada, anyway.

I like doing it with Crunchies, but i can never find them down here in the US.

I’m big on the coloring books, this is one of those things that I’m always surprised to hear about other adults doing (as several people have mentioned it already) and I’ve noticed that other adults who visit are often willing to color. I think there is a vast underground of adults who color.

At my parents’ house, I have a dollhouse that I got for Christmas when I was a kid (it’s too big to fit in our little New York apartment). It’s the kind that you’re supposed to look at, not play with (I have no idea what my parents were thinking on that point, but it describes a lot of gifts I received as a child). Now that I have an adult’s income, I do buy furniture and dolls for it, the nice kind that you’re supposed to look at, not play with. And when I visit my parents’ house, I install the new furniture, and then PLAY WITH IT. HA HA HA MOM AND DAD!

jk1245 has hit the nail on the head. The Golden Excuse, if you will.

Being the father of a two year old, I find I spend an inordinate amount of my time lately playing with playdough (and waiting for the days when we can graduate to the firmer and more versatile “modelling clay”); crayons and coloring books; the construction of “forts” using the couch, its cushions, and a blanket; and rediscovering the joys of all things Sesame Street.

Particularly Cookie Monster. I have no idea why, and can’t recall if this was this case the first time I watched the show, but Cookie Monster cracks me up. I am no longer allowed, in fact, to eat cookies (or potato chips, or M&Ms, or what have you) without making the noise, whilst scarfing up three or four at a time.

She is allowed (and in fact, we insist on this) to eat in a proper manner, like a “Big Girl.” But daddy always gets told to “do it right!” if he tries to eat a single cookie at a time.

She’s encouraging me. Go figure.

Sounds like Skeezix and I have the same one: Muppets. On Sesame Street or in the movies or on The Muppet Show, I just dig 'em. If I could work for the Jim Henson Company, I’d go to work smiling every morning.

And I’m a 29 year old male.

The muppet show is aimed at adults though so I watch it guilt free.

Bork!

In the case the username didn’t give it away, Godzilla. Also comic books. Japanese animation as well (I can sing the entire “Star Blazers” theme song for all three seasons).

I’m a 36-year-old male. I have to admit, however, that a lot of my continued interest in such childish passions is probably directly related to my being single. Now that I am actually engaged for the first time and looking at the prospect of marriage, I find I have more interesting things to occupy my free time. I guess it really is all about growing up and getting a life after all. Oh well, at least I haven’t been living in my parent’s basement for the last 15 years…

Barry

I sleep with two kissy bears (Valentines pressie from long distance bf - whine whine - still smells of his cologne)… and two soft toy Rhinos (reminder of bf too lol)…

Love licking all the choc off the bars before eating em, esp Malteasers and Crunchies… also eating the centre of a Star Bar with the handle of a teaspoon lol…

Probs lots of other things but cant think now cos I’m busy sucking choc off a Kit Kat right now

Feet pajamas. Except I don’t actually have a pair at the moment. But I’m gonna git me some!

Female, about 6 months away from 30

I like the Harry Potter computer games - I made a point of telling my brother how much I enjoyed the first one that he gave me for Christmas a year ago, hoping that he’d give me the second one last Christmas. He did.
I really enjoy reading YA fantasy/science fiction novels - I have specific authors I enjoy, and will make a point of setting aside the funds for purchase when I know that a new one is coming out (or when an older one is being re-released).

Holy shit, I love that movie.

I have an mp3 of the main title.

Male, too close to 25.

Animaniacs! They have baloney in their slacks!

My kids know not to play with my toys, fridge magnets or to use my box of crayons–they have their own. My favorite toy is a 18" Tick doll that says cool stuff when you press the button on his back. My boys are 10 and 7 and they give me a wonderful excuse to wallow in the joys of my youth and introduce them to pop rocks, School House Rock, Chinese jump rope, cats cradle, and countless other things I still love to do.

One has kids in order to become a kid again.

My indulgences are, but not limited too,

slinkies

kazooes

Spongebob SquarePants

Children’s books

Harry Potter

Coloring

Ice Skating

Building a snow man

Dexter’s Laboratory

Thomas the Tank Engine

Marbles

Hot Wheels /Match Box Cars

All of my hobbies (except reading) would be considered childish by most adults:

computer games
XBox
D&D and other RPGs
Hirst Arts blocks (think Legos for adults: www.hirstarts.com)
paintball
painting fantasy miniatures
reading comic strip collections (like Foxtrot, Far Side, etc)

Spongebob! How could I forget him?

My friends and I have this horrible habit of walking down the street, one of us will yell “Whoooooooo lives in a pineapple under the sea?”

And of course, the rest of us will respond, in unison: “SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!”

And we are grown-ups with grown-up jobs.
