The other day I was thinking about how I can eat a lot of veggies really quickly for cheap. Juicing is great, but it takes a lot of time preparing and then cleaning the juicer. Then I thought about how baby food is just mashed up veggies, I think. Now, I know almost nothing about baby food… is this an acceptable method for adults to get good nutrition quickly and cheaply?
Maybe you should check out the prices of baby food, kind of expensive for a couple adult sized spoon full ain’t it? Why not just buy some canned vegtables?
It has been 20 years since I had to buy baby food, but it’s main advantages then were convenience and portability. It’s disadvantage was prohibitively high price. You could buy fresh, frozen, or canned vegetables for about a third of the cost of those little jars. Whenever we were at home we always prepared our own baby food from fresh or frozen, and only used the Gerber stuff on the road.
As a current baby food buyer, I can tell you that a 4 oz jar at WalMart is between .45 and .60, depending on brand & type (the organics are in the $.60 range).
I just grabbed a jar of Gerber “Mixed Vegetables” from the pantry.
Ingredients: potatoes, carrots, water and peas. Calories - 45, Total Fat - 0g, Sodium - 45mg, Potassium - 230mg, Total Carb - 9g, Fiber - 2g, Sugars - 4g (natural vegetable sugars only), Protein - 1g.
% Daily Values (presumably, for a baby): Protein 7%, Vitamin A 200%, Vitamin C 0%, Calcium 2%, Iron 2%, Zinc 4%.
I think if all you’re looking at is convenience, you could live on baby food. I’m currently trying to lose my pregnancy weight and, trust me, I’ve considered going on an all baby food diet, just because I think it would be an easy way to count calories and get nutrition without added sugar, preservatives, etc. Then I tasted the stuff…blech. Except for the fruits - they’re pretty good.
A friend of mine had a g/f who only ate babyfood. Her food expnse was rather high as I recall.
(I don’t know why she did this, except it was by choice).
I’ve got nothing to add constructively. A girl I used to know (ok and have a big crush on) would eat baby food as a snack. Even brought the stuff to school to eat. dunno why, but I found it really sexy to see her doing something so odd. Guess i’m a freak
After my stomach operation I had to eat it for a while. It is horrible stuff. I don’t recommend it.
Baby fruit is pretty good, as I recall. The veggies are very bland – completely unsalted and unseasoned. And very expensive. When my kids were babies, I usually pureed whatever we were having for dinner in the blender for them. I only bought the prepared baby food when we were traveling or eating out. Canned or frozen vegetables will be lots cheaper and more flavorful than baby food. If you want it pureed, just get out the blender. Even if you had to buy a cheap bleander, it’d pay for itself in no time.
