I went to Burger King this Saturday evening for supper. I very often go there on Saturday evenings. I was about to order, when I saw on the “rotating” part of the digital menu board that they had the Stacker.
A few years back, I really liked the BK Stacker. For those of you who are not familiar with it, it’s a simple sandwich – meat, cheese, bacon, and a special sauce instead of mayo. But it never seemed to be a regular part of the menu, and I thought it went away after a fairly short time. It was the diameter of a hamburger, which (at Burger King) is roughly half the diameter of the Whopper. It came as a single, double, or triple (1, 2, or 3 patties). For me, with the smaller diameter, the triple was just about the right amount of food.
So, when I saw that it once again occupied a place on the menu board, I thought, “Yay! I’ll order that instead.” So I strode up to the register, and confidently ordered a triple Stacker meal. The price was definitely higher than it had been, but I chalked that up to rising prices in general.
Surprise!
It turns out that Burger King has upgraded the Stacker. It is now the size of a Whopper. It doesn’t have all the toppings, but in effect, I had ordered a triple Whopper. I gave it a good go, but I’m not going to make myself physically uncomfortable just to avoid wasting food. Besides, I really should lose some weight. I managed to eat about 75-80% of it before I gave up.
That’s crazy. Usually over time things get smaller. I love Sonics footlong cheese coney. It used to be huge. Never could finish it. Now it’s about the size of a generous regular hotdog. Bummer.
I kind of liked Burger King’s hot dogs when they had them. I just had to remember to order them with light condiments or else it would be swimming them.
This thread brought me back to the mid '80s and the Burger King in my local mall, where all the kids hung out. That’s where I discovered the Original Chicken Sandwich. I do still like them, mind you, but back then they were awesome. I really miss how they used to wrap the sandwich, cut it in half on the diagonal, then wrap again.
It feels weird and stupid to be waxing nostalgic about a fast food sandwich I could go out and eat for lunch today if I wanted. But the mind is a weird and stupid place.
I still love a Whopper Jr. My occasional treat, when I am famished and an energy bar just ain’t gonna do it. I was shocked to find it is over $3 now, and they didn’t even give me a napkin in the little paper bag!
After Superstorm Sandy my home and nearly my entire town were without power for days (weeks in my case) and one of the few places in town that had power was a Burger King. They were very kind and welcoming and made sure they exposed every plug in the place so people could charge phones and devices and were okay with people staying when they only ordered a little bit of food. I appreciated that and made sure to eat there sometimes afterwards even though I feel like sometime around 15 years ago or so something changed and BK’s food became hot garbage.
