I am thinking of moving to San Diego. I don’t have a job lined up or anything, but I am sick of Chicago (mainly the prospect of another winter). I am looking for advice on good areas to look in San Diego. I am 25. I would like to live within walking distance of music clubs/bars (or as long as I get there without driving-actually it the getting back that is a problem.), that also has resturants, and is safe. I am pretty open on rent, or will be unless I can’t find a job. My current lease ends at the end of September, so that is the time I am looking to move. I have tried looking for places on the net, but I had really bad experience looking for places this way in Chicago. Everybody here seems to use our free weekly the Reader. Is there something similar in San Diego? Do they post listing on-line?
By the way, anybody know of a job in San Diego. I have a college degree and two years experience as Account Manger in the insurance industry? I am half joking about the job, I don’t know policy on using the board to find employment. HA!
Sounds like you want to look at both MB (Mission Beach) and PB (Pacific Beach) lots of folks your age, lots of places to hang. If you’re from Chicago, you know that “safe” is a relative term. These are city neighborhoods.
Yes, there is a San Diego Reader, and yes, they do post listings online. Do a little googling, and I’m sure you’ll find it with no problems.
As for your specific needs, per a location, I think that OldBroad’s suggestion of Pacific Beach is a good one(I don’t know much about MB to comment). Otherwise, hmm…I don’t know, I’m a north county hick.
Yes, it is called the Reader as well. I’m not sure what kind of online presence they have, though. You could also try the regular newspaper, the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach are all particularly close to entertainment. You could also probably look in the Hillcrest area. Anything near SDSU may suit your needs, if you’re not afraid of being right in the midst of college life.
Be prepared for sticker shock. I’m not sure what kind of rent you pay now, but we’re known for being one of the more expensive regions of the state, excluding the whole Bay Area that’s even monumentally worse.
It’s a great town, though, and I highly recommend it. I moved down here from LA in 1991, and I’d be hard pressed to go back.
Here is the link to the San Diego Reader. Check out their Classified section and the Job Giant for listings. The SD Reader even has a Cecil sound alike called Mathew Alice.
Sounds like PB and MB are perfect for you but as Scout1222 says, rents are high here.
Around Mesa college youll find a nice cheap area to live. No bars though. SD comes up a lot
you might search the board for it, or the net. Colleges have jobs & such so, might
be worth it to be a student in some casual class to take advantage of what they have.
Thanks for the advice everyone. The rent shouldn’t be problem, if I can find a job. I tried to find other threads on San Diego about where to live, but the S.D. threads I could find were mostly what to visit while in town.
I am hoping to to go out there in August so, hopefully I will be able to check out some places then. I guess it is kind of early to look for a place if I’m looking to move in October.
If anybody has any advice about San Diego or any other place they think would be fun to live in, I would be really like to hear it.
Actually, handy, I don’t live too far off from Mesa College, and that also is a good part of town. But, as he says, not much night life. But that’s okay by me.
Advice - not much, other than you’ll definitely need a car. No way will you be able to rely on the trolley or other mass transit!
