So, i’m packing my things for a trip out there… well not the big things, because I only have half the funds I need to move, but the little non-essential crap… Anyways - i’m packing and I realise “I have no idea where to live once i’m there”
So If any of you can tell me where the cheapest neighborhoods are it would be greatly appreciated. I don’t care if they’re ghetto, Tampa’s best neighborhoods are like San Diego’s worst, and i’m gettin the Hell outta here.
Basically, the further you get from the coast, the cheaper things get (with some exceptions).
You might check out City Heights. It was a high crime, low income area for a long time and still has its problems. However, various organizations have been pouring money into it for a while now (new library, schools, recreation area, planned shopping areas, etc.) and it has changed a lot. It’s also not too far from the coast and has an interesting ethnic mix (which makes for lots of good, cheap restaurants.)
The South Bay is also fairly inexpensive (I know they’re building lots of homes out there that are relatively cheap, so I’d guess there’d be some apartments, too.).
Keep in mind that “cheap” is a relative term. San Diego’s a pretty pricey market, compared to what the pay is in this area. Not as bad as the bay area, but pretty costly.
El Cajon, La Mesa and other non-coastal areas can be cheaper, too. In the north, there’s Escondido or Vista. Depends on where you’re going to be working. Hopefully you won’t have a long ass commute.
Aww - pezpunk is gonnna miss me (like a heart attack). Hrm… priorities and limits…
Well then main thing is I can live real cheap, that doesn’t bug me. The main reason i’m moving out there is to get a band started in a punk-friendly enviornment. I actually already have a few friends out there, and they were telling me that most of the local stuff is punk, but really bad.
Anyways, I plan on just hitting every bar and club the day I get out there and seeing if they need a bartender or someone to work the door/look for underage drinkers. I figure that will at least pay the bills until I can find something decent (I do networking and computer support right now). I’ve actually done a lot of checking into different areas - San Diego seems like the place i’d like most (weather, crime rate, general attitude, etc). I dunno if that answers your questions Esprix, but if you have any others, feel free to ask
Hmm. I think he meant more like “what part of town do you need to be near” and “how much do you have to spend on rent”, but that’s just me.
Sounds like you’d want to be a close drive to downtown or Pacific Beach. If you don’t mind some roomies there are probably pockets of cheap stuff not too far from there. Some places in PB can be pricey, but there’s also a lot of young folk there, too. Farther inland is better, like east of Ingraham.
Downtownish I’m not too familiar with, so maybe others can give you guidance.
Hmm. Sounds like maybe this would call for a welcome to town dopefest eventually.
lol, yeah… see me and Santa have a lot in common… we both like to sneak into your house laaaate at night… Only Santa likes to leave things, broccoli! prefers to take a few.
I dunno - It just sounded good i’ll talk to youse all later, going home for the weekend (yes, I have three day weekends! LOL!)
Okay, the link I got from MapQuest was way too big to paste in. But go there & type in Logan Avenue. You’ll get maps for zip code 92113.
From looking at the maps, it looks like it’s just south of Downtown, and just east of Lindbergh Field. I’m not sure exactly what kind of area it’s in, but I don’t think it’s the best. But it may just be a “run down” area, not necessarily a “bars on the door, afraid to go outside” area. Very central, to be sure, and not all that far from the coast, so weather will be nice and mild.
Have you checked out College Area? That’s near SDSU, so I bet there are lots of apartment complexes there, and probably not too pricey. That’s just south of Interstate 8, and it’s probably 10-15 miles from the coast, also pretty central to the San Diego area.
Unfortunately my areas of expertise are few - Pacific Beach, Carmel Mountain Ranch (suburbian family central!) and just recently Scripps Ranch/Mira Mesa.
Although I don’t know how pricey it is, one of the most popular places for bars/restaurants is the Gaslamp district, so if you’d be looking for bar pick-up work, that’d be the place to look and possibly live (although it’s pretty much downtown, so I don’t know how expensive it is). You might also want to check out the areas surrounding Hillcrest - Mission Valley, Mission Hills, North Park. Easy commute south to downtown, easy commute north to the 'burbs, La Jolla and such. Fairly centrally located, IMHO.
I also have a friend who is a landlord and might have some one-bedrooms available by the time you get here. Again, I’d need to know what you’re looking for in an apartment and what your price range is. Specifics, man, specifics!
If you’re wondering, I’m in Mira Mesa, which is a suburb north of downtown, but not quite in north county, just across the highway from La Jolla.
Well, I know for sure i’m gonna have two roommates, so I’ll need a three bedroom. I’ll need to keep the price under $400 a room (so $1,200 or less for a 3 br). Yeah, i’ll probably be kickin’ it ghetto for a while (starving musicians). And I’m pretty sure it will be at the end of november/early december on the time. I hope that’s specific enough, because that’s all I have to go on I’m kinda just wingin’ it, if you couldn’t tell…
Next time I talk to my landlord friend I’ll find out what his situation is looking like the next few months. Otherwise, for that price range, I’d still recommend North Park or Mission Hills - close enough to universities and hospitals that the rent is probably what you’re looking for, and both nice areas.
