On further review, the AFA has moved the results to the poll page itself.
Current results are:
I oppose legalization of homosexual marriage and “civil unions”
39.50% (161816 votes)
I favor legalization of homosexual marriage
52.15% (213619 votes)
I favor a “civil union” with the full benefits of marriage except for the name
8.34% (34179 votes)
Of course, I’m sure they can check their logs to see how people were arriving at the polling page, and maybe when they see so many people clicked from here, they’ll find a way to dismiss the poll.
It was linked to more places than just here, though. Anyhow, so what? Just because we’re a hotbed of reason and justice for all and they’re a hotbed of bigoted assholery, it’s all still real people with real opinions. They can’t pretend it was ever going to be statistically significant or scientifically accurate. “America’s Poll,” indeed.
They can claim whatever they want. It’s not as if a neutral third party is monitoring the poll, after all. They could even change the results if they really wanted to and present it to Congress that way. They can also say something like, “It’s common knowledge that the Straight Dope Message Board is a bastion of goofy liberals who want to rip the fabric of the American family apart.”
The AFA results now stand at 59.75% in favor of gay marriage, with 32% opposing. In contrast, a just-released NPR poll shows almost exactly the reverse numbers: 56% oppose gay marriage, and 30% support it.
I’d guess the NPR poll is more rigorously conducted, and the AFA should by now realize that a sloppily-done poll (e.g., what’s to stop people from voting more than once?) provides only meaningless results.
