The American Family Association , an anti-gay group, is sponsoring a web poll that they claim they are intending to to present to Congress as a representation of American opinion on gay marriage.
Given their member base, it was not designed with much fairness in mind.
Many people are trying to encourage everyone to vote, to give the AFA a truer picture of popular opinion.
Please go and vote . It requires leaving your name and e-mail address, but there is a way to be immediately removed from their mailing lists. (I can’t find the link atm, perhaps a bit of help?)There have been some allegations of monkeying with the numbers (on both sides), which, along with the intial bias and the reliablity of web polls anyway, casts a huge amount of doubt on the results. Please, add your voice anyway.
I had no problem getting through to the site, the poll, and the results. Here’s the scorecard, as of 11:38 am EST:
*America’s Poll on Homosexual Marriage *
I oppose legalization of homosexual marriage and “civil unions”
45.22% (141890 votes)
I favor legalization of homosexual marriage
47.05% (147634 votes)
I favor a “civil union” with the full benefits of marriage except for the name
7.74% (24281 votes)
When I voted, “I favor legalization of homosexual marriage” was at something like 5%. Its been really interesting to watch it catch up, and now pass the opposing tally. On the AFA website. (Which evidentally hates me now…awww…and I signed up for thier action e-mail list and everything…)
I oppose legalization of homosexual marriage and “civil unions” 43.75%
(146274 votes)
I favor legalization of homosexual marriage 48.35%
(161641 votes)
I favor a “civil union” with the full benefits of marriage except for the name 7.90%
(26429 votes)
All right! I got an email about this a few days ago and voted. It was something like 70% against, 10% for. I wonder if they’re going to USE this poll if the numbers keep going in favor. Hee hee!
I just like that I can cite an AFA poll saying that the majority of America supports either gay marriage or civil unions. Completely useless as a scientific stat, but fun! There were doubts that they could present it to congress and get anything more than getting it round filed. That is still the case, but it will be cute if they comment at all.
The rest of the site is a hoot as well. That said, current stats are below.
I oppose legalization of homosexual marriage and “civil unions” 42.87%
(148470 votes)
I favor legalization of homosexual marriage 49.13%
(170161 votes)
I favor a “civil union” with the full benefits of marriage except for the name 8.00%
(27693 votes)
The Results Page of the Marriage Poll appears to now just say “Thank you for signing this poll.” It does not give an ongoing tally of results as it did previously.
According to this tracking site, as of 10:10 p.m. Central Time, Friday night, the results were:
