AFI Top 100 Quotes from US movies - what should be in/out?

I was kind of surprised that the best line from major League didn’t make it

Understand your point, but that’s kind of unfair, because then why are any movies, say, post-1980 even on the list?

oops, that was supposed to be in reply to Wile E

And that’s a damned shame. One of the most chilling lines around, to my way of thinking.

O’course, I got a thing for Britishers playing Nazis.

And I agree that Inigo Montoya’s line should have been included, as well.

Waste

“The Princess Bride” has a rabid following among nerds and Internet users; among the general public it’s not a hugely popular film. I mean, it’s not “Gigli” by any means, but… I know in the online community it’s a quote-tastic film but most people either haven’t seen it, don’t remember it, or don’t give a crap about it, and it didn’t age well. It’s worth noting that “Ghostbusters” has no quotes in the Top 100 despite being a more popular movie from about the same time and having a LOT of good lines (Ray, the next time someone asks if you’re a god, YOU SAY YES!!!) There’s also no quotes from “The Blues Brothers” despite being a great movie with several great quotes (We’re on a mission… from God.)

You could make a case for “My name is Inigo Montoya…” being in the top 100, but certainly towards the bottom.

No, it’s not unfair, most of the other quotes are quite well-known despite being in movies from pre-1980, many even from the 30’s and 40’s. I don’t really think a line that sort of lost it’s popularity a few years after the film really fits with that bunch.

GLWasteful - I got a thing for not watching crazed dentists torture people. I have enough phobias as it is.

Seriously, no “I am your father”? What a waste.

I am stunned that nothing from Pulp Fiction, perhaps the most quoted film in the past decade, made the list. Perhaps they’re all too vulgar.

I would nominate Bogart’s retort to Bacall in The Big Sleep:

Bacall: You go too far, Marlowe
Bogart: Those are harsh words to throw at a man, especially when he’s walking out of your bedroom.

That line just kills me. However, I will concede that it’s nowhere near as well known as the others on that list (or the many that were mentioned here.)

These might not be that famous, but I like them.

Ghostbusters

“Mother pus bucket”

“Back off man, I’m a scientist”

“He slimed me”

Repo Man

“No way man, there’s alot of room to move up as a fry clerk. You know in 2 years, I could be manager, king, god”

“You could be thinking about a plate of shrimp and someone will say plate or shrimp or plate of shrimp. Ain’t no reason for it, no sense in looking for one”

“John Wayne, was a fag”

“Radiation, yes indeed. You hear so many outragous lies about it. Half baked goggle boxed do-gooders telling everybody it’s bad for you”

“Ever hear of the neutron bomb. Kills people but leaves building standing. So small it fits inside a suitcase, nobody knows it’s there until one day Blam! Skin melts, eyes explode, everybody dead. Working on something so amoral can drive a man mad. That’s what happened to this friend of mine, so eh had a labotomy. And now he’s well again.”

I understand why ‘May the Force be with you.’ made it for Star Wars but I would have gone with the true defining quote of the series…

“I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”

TWO from Jerry McGuire? Maybe we should pair these people with those idiots who made the ‘greatest American’ list.

Mein Fuhrer! I can WALK!

Dr. Strangelove

I object to the oversight of Marlene Dietrich’s line from the end of Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil: “He was some kind of a man – what does it matter what you say about people?”

I guess it just lacks something that “Toga! Toga!” (Animal House) has. :dubious:

“son, you’ve got a panty on your head” from raising arizona

It’s not entirely forgotten. When I graduated high school, I insisted that we leave trite things like “Congratulations” off the cake and have it say only “Plastics.”

Casablanca and probably two-thirds of the movies on the Top 100 list were released before I was born, but I recognized them. You can watch old movies, you know. Not just MTV. Turn the channel and start.

A line I just used the other day:

And, maybe too long for the list, but definitely an all time classic:

To be fair those two lines are quoted (and definetly were quoted at the time) ad infinitum. There may not be a person alive who doesn’t know “Show Me the Money”, even those who never saw the movie. And the “You complete me” line is played over and over.

Those quotes have had a LOT of power behind them since that movie came out.

I’ve never seen Jerry McGuire, yet I know those quotes (and have heard them constantly), while I’ve seen Pulp Fiction 2 or 3 times and I can’t remember a single quote outside of the “Royale with cheese” line.

Shame, that. He does it with such finesse.

I can’t believe that was the one chosen for Caddyshack, when this one:

Is so much funnier and much more famous.
