I’m dreadfully put out by the absence of any quotes from The Big Lebowski or Pulp Fiction.
“Obviously, you’re not a golfer.”
“I’m gonna get medieval on your ass.”
There are some immortal lines in those movies.

The list of 400 candidate lines didn’t even include any from Glengarry Glen Ross
“Put the coffee down! Coffee is for closers only!”
Or Tombstone
“I’m your huckleberry.”
I wish everyone would say what movie their quotes are from.
Things that struck me about the list:
They should have started a bit earlier and stopped a bit earlier. Quoting from memory: “You played it for her; you can play it for me. Play it, Sam.”
I’ve heard the following lines (“I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.”) quoted far more often–or the whole sequence. I found them chilling. The “Daisy, Daisy” sequence was good, too.
This belonged MUCH higher on the list.
There were some movies just riddled with memorable lines.
I agree that “Put. The candle. Back.” (Young Frankenstein) was great. I can still see that image in my mind.
Silence of the Lambs had some other great lines.
“I have a bad feeling about this” is almost as well-known (and representative) a line from Star Wars as “May the force be with you,” “I am your father,” and “scruffy nerf herder” (which was such a stupid line that I still hear it regularly.
The line was Midnight Cowboy was totally ad-libbed. The crew was holding back NYC traffic wile shooting the scene, and a taxi cab that was tired of waiting pulled through and damn near hit Hoffman& Voigt. While Hoffman really didn’t have a stretch to stay in character, how Voight remained Joe Buck is beyond me.
“Rommel! You magnificent bastard! I read your BOOK!”
Not even in the top 400.
Thought of another last night from Fried Green Tomatoes:
I’m older and I have more insurance!
It’s all in the delivery, though.
“Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb” Batman 1966.
“Well that’s like your oppinion, man” The Big Labowski
For Cassablanca, it’s a shame you couldn’t use the dialogue. My favorite bit was:
“You’re closing me down!”
“Yes I’m shocked… shocked to find that there is gambling here!”
“You’re winnings monsieur”
“Oh thank you!”
“She’s my sister…she’s my daughter…she’s my sister…she’s my daughter…she’s my sister AND my daughter!” - Chinatown
“Get this walking carpet out of my way” - Star Wars
“Because I am not one of your FAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNSSSSSS!!!” - Mommie, Dearest
“Let’s do the time warp again.” - Rocky Horror Picture Show (yes it’s from a song, but Riff-Raff speaks it as dialogue in the finale, just after killing Dr. Frank’n’Furter)
“Eyyyyy, what’s up Doc?” - Bugs Bunny cartoons (they were theatrical shorts long before they appeared on television, therefore they count as movie lines!)
“You’re disssspiCable” - Daffy Duck
“Be wery, wery quiet. It’s wabbit season, you know, heh-heh, heh-heh, hee.” - Elmer J. Fudd
“My name is Elmer J. Fudd. I own a mansion and a yacht.” - Elmer (& Bugs)
“I wish you hadn’t done that, rabbit. You’ve made me very angry.” - Marvin the Martian.
“Y Tu Mama Tambien” - from take a guess where?

Oh, and I forgot:
“Therrreee iiisss nooo sssaaanctuarrryyy. Theeeyyy’rrreee aaalll fffrrrrozzzeeen.” - Logan’s Run
“Wait till they get a load of me!” - Batman
“There is a rumor going about that the brown acid is no good. Don’t eat the brown acid.” - Woodstock
The one thing this tread shows is that all of us have absolute crap for taste. Most of the lines quoted by posters have absolutely zero business being on the list. Just because you like the line doesn’t make it a classic, you know. A great line from a movie nobody saw is also a joke. Lines must resonate with a large number of people over a large number of years, not just with your little group for the last two months.
I agree with Silenus
That said, I love this quote from Mystery Men
Casanova will have many weapons; To beat him you will have to have more than forks and flatulence.
And Repo Man is my all-time favorite quote machine. In addition to the ones listed before…
*What about our relationship? Fuck that.
I’m glad I tortured you!
You eat a lot of acid, Miller, back in the hippie days?
What are you? A fuckin’ commie? I don’t want no commies in my car. No Christians either!
Let’s do some crimes. Lets go get some sushi and not pay!*
Actually, this is Bogie’s line much later in the movie. The AFI’s quote is Ilsa’s when she first walks into Rick’s.
That was #2 on the list.
Actually it is listed as 4. Somehow I missed it.
So I’ll use an old SNL quote
“Oh, Nevermind” :smack:
I didn’t get to watch the show. What rank did these have?
“What happens when a toad is struck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else.”
X-Men
“I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth”
Attack of the Clones
“Nobody tosses a dwarf!”
Fellowship of the Ring
Walloon and silenus, you guys are so right!
Meaning no insults, I feel like I walked into a nursery school class with all the weak suggestions coming from the twenty-five and younger set around here. And no, I’m not ancient. A large percentage of the chosen films were made before I was born or when I was a mere youngster. Still, I managed to see them, and I can appreciate why they were picked.
That said, here’s my biggest problem with the list:
#20 (“Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship,” Casablanca, 1942) needs to be much higher on the list. (Yeah, even if it means getting very close to “Here’s looking at you, kid,” #5, also from Casablanca.)
How did I miss the Dr. Strangelove quote? I’m not sure which I prefer…if it were up to me, both would be on the list (the other being mine from a previous post).
Another quote I’d like to add to the list is from Fargo. It’s my favorite movie and this, for my money, is the most important quote in the movie.
"There’s more to life than a little money, ya know. Don’tcha know that? And here ya are. And it’s a beautiful day. Well. I just don’t understand it. "
I don’t think this one is on the list but I’d kinda like to see it there. It may not be quotable enough though.
Nobody puts baby in the corner? Really? They couldnt have thrown a tombstone line in there? There’s enough of them to go around.
What is a tombstone line?
A quote from the movie Tombstone.
Doc Holliday: Why Kate, You’re not wearing a bustle. How lewd.
Doc Holliday: It appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds.
Doc Holliday: It’s true, you are a good woman. Then again, you may be the antichrist.
Val Kilmer got all the good lines.
