What High School is this? “Lil Kim - Dress Up Like A Ho High.”
Those outfits are just awful, leave the Basket Ball Jerseys on the court, not a Formal Dance like the Prom. Fright Night, I think.
Looks like Xena went to the Prom.

These are pretty cool outfits. I agree, much better than peach and baby-blue taffeta.
At my prom (school was 50-50 black-white) lots of the guys did the pimped out thing with canes, hats, some zebra stripe or bright colors. And some of the girls has interesting, verging on skankalicious, dresses.
I like the jersey tuxes and dresses.
I’m sorry, maybe I’m missing something here, but why would anyone wonder if a few photos from one prom at one high school were representative of African-Americans and their tastes in formalwear in general? Unless the school has a fairly small African-American population then they aren’t even representative of African-American students at that school – they’re just this guy’s friends. Presumably he didn’t bother to get photos of people he doesn’t know or like.
Heck, we don’t even know if this is what this particular group of kids would normally wear to a formal dance. It may be that this prom had some sort of unusual theme, or that a bunch of kids just decided it would be more fun to make their own outfits or something.
I think they are fun, cool, sexy and creative. Even the one with the pasties. The bottom half has a very unusual shape. I’d like to see it in better detail.
My favorite is the one where the guys and the girls are all matching, even down to the shoes. Very cool.
I’m proud of my lil brothas and sistas and these outfits. some are a lil excessive, but creative nonetheless
I think that this just shows the potential of some of the Black youth have. Think about it, these are the kids that create the trends. Now if only they would put these talents to good use as well…
That’s what I was wondering. Somehow I think the analogous collection would be introduced as “Look at these skanky prom outfits,” not “Do all white people wear skanky prom outfits?”
Lamia, that’s just how it is. Since I’ve been here, I’ve (indirectly, by virtue of my skin color) been asked if we all put fruit in our Kool-Aid (based on two commercials, mind you), why we just love Red Lobster so much (I hate that restaurant) and why it is that only we say axe and boff instead of ask and both.
Wheeee!
I went ahead and did some research.
Of 10,000 african american prom attendees surveyed in 2003, 80% wore “non traditional” garb (including basketball jerseys, pasties, pimp outfits etc) 70% reported having worn the same outfit to the mall the following day.
So, yes, it’s normal for black people to dress that way to prom
 :smack: :wally  :smack: :wally  :smack: :wally  :smack: :wally  :smack: :wally :dubious:
Um, I doubt it’s a “black” thing. However, it’s tacky as hell! YUCK YUCK YUCK!
Okay, someone contact the Fashion Police, ASAP!
For one thing, what’s UP with that girl and the pasties? There is no way my school would have let her inside the prom in a get up like that?
And the sports outfits? YUCK! You LOOK STUPID!!!
The Louis Vitton or whatever people-the one girl with the tiara, her dress is actually a good cut, but that pattern is NOT FLATTERING!
Hello, whatever happened to class? I mean, yeah, if you want to dress goofy, that’s one thing-I myself would probably end up wearing all Edwardian/Titanic era clothing. Or medieval or something. Hell, I would probably wear a dress from Attack of the Clones, like the Picnic Gown or the Lake Gown.
But even though the second one is backless, it still is tasteful. I don’t think this is about being black. I think it’s just about having absolutely no taste whatsoever.
I’m guessing someone took the worst fashion victims and put them up. I’m sure that the majority weren’t all skanked up.
I applaud their creativity.
Having said that, I’d like to say that this is the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen all month. What a display of misguided intentions this is.
Besides, one errant brush of a hand or a misstep and the wearer of such garb is in cahoots with the law.
And “Dan” and his date from 20 years ago didn’t scare anyone else? Put some makeup on that girl, some color somewhere, she’s wearing her mom’s funeral dress! Dan, shave those porkchop sideburns! I love prom kids (and yes, my mamma would’ve shackled me to the back fence before allowing me out of the house in those dresses, what’s the matter with you, you’re grandmother will just die, you father kills himself to keep a roof over our heads and you want to go out like that, your sisters never wanted to dress like that!!!) and good taste is almost always challenged by teens; i’ll-fitting dresses, wrong undergarmets, almost-matching shoes, over-accesorizing! It’s a delight to see one in a flattering dress with lovely makeup and hair.
No one in these photos, though…
I love the sports jersey ones. I’m not a big fan of regular jerseys, but I think the modified ones are cute.
The prom at my school is pretty much balloons and crepe paper in the gym, so I don’t think anyone would go through as much trouble as those kids did. As far as I know (I haven’t gone to any dances), people just show up in regular prom dresses and tuxedos.
If I ever do go to a dance, I plan on wearing a dress that’s really nice, but doesn’t scream, “PROM!” You know, one that didn’t come from the prom section at Sears.
Yech, I know what you mean…Hell, none of those outfits even faintly resembled my idea of Louis Vuitton. It doesn’t matter to me whether or not it’s a black thing–it’s looks pretty gross.
vivian–
All I can say is I’m glad I don’t, and never have, followed “trends”…
I liked the “red carpet” that paved the way to the dance!
Even though a few of the kids looked a little tacky, overall it seemed they were having a good time getting dressed up and showing off.
Was it Louis Vitton or Gucci that the group of 3 guys and a girl were wearing? I thought they looked really cute and I bet they had a great time planning their outfits. How fun!!!
But, the pastie girl has gotta go.
The 5th pic down is from some website that does custom alterations. Someone sent it to me a while back, I thought it was pretty funny. If I can find the website I’ll post it. I’ll have to look through my work mail tomorrow.
This joker on this mb just collected the most ghetto prom pics that he could. The “picture” area looks different in 4 of them. It’s obviously not his HS.
He admitted as much. He received these in an email.
Actually, what I was going to say was something similar to mouthbreather. These pictures are definitely not all taken in the same place/time and I don’t think all of them are prom pictures. The backgrounds don’t seem to fit in some of them.
Yeah-you can tell now that I look at it that they’re all from different sites and places.
Who is Louis Vuitton? (Is he/it like Prada or “high fashion” I would prefer Givenchy-hey, it worked for Audrey Hepburn!)
Oh, and I think the Pasty Girl was Photo-shopped. I mean, come ON, there is no fucking way anyone would be allowed into a prom like that!
I think Louis Vuitton mostly makes handbags and luggage, but yeah, it’s pricey stuff like Prada. And yeah, it’s arse-ugly.
See, I find nothing here to be proud of. What are we seeing here? A generation who is infected with a complete lack of imagination, if you ask me. These outfits are nothing more than walking exemplifications of the (fake) bling-bling, nothing better to emulate than L’il Kim or Allan Iverson, immodest, arrogant media-driven ghetto culture.
There’s nothing creative about showing off skin. That pasties dress wasn’t even sexy, just provocative. There’s nothing creative about taking the symbol of someone else (be it a Louis Vuitton logo or a pro basketball jersey) and appropriating it for oneself.
One school, five schools, it doesn’t matter. For me, this is an absolute embarassment. I don’t care if these kids are following trends or starting them, or if these outfits made them the coolest things ever seen at their schools, they’re tacky, they’re trashy and they’re nothing anyone needs to be proud of.
How can you apply what you see in a few photos to an entire generation? That’s no better than the OP, in my opinion.
