After seeing People Of New York I understand culture better

Like what a sneak brag is, or that NYC appears to be composed of nothing but “straw liberals”.

Now if you all will excuse me I have to get back to my gender queer women’s studies.

Oh this is cool. I’ve spent the past hour reading about other people’s lives.

That’s a really nice site. I often see attempts at similar for my city but the people behind the attempts never seem to approach a decent cross section of the community. It’s usually just all dudes with moustaches and ostentatious attire.

Why TF does the text have to turn red when you mouse over it? And when you mouse over a picture stuff pops up. There is almost nowhere to safely put your cursor.

Even on my non-wide screen monitor, there’s a ton of white space on the side–plenty of “safe” room for your mouse. I intrinsically move my mouse over white space, to keep it from blocking any text, so I hadn’t even noticed the problems you were citing.

But, apparently, the descriptions are links to a fullscreen version of the photos, and the pics link to a slideshow version of the story, one story at a time.

I really don’t understand why that would give you such a negative view of ‘culture’.

That lifted my mood. No idea why.

Really enjoying this…thank you.

Cool - first time I’ve seen this - I ordered two copies of the book - as I think they might make good presents - and were a reasonable ~$15.

Mashable did a video piece about the guy behind HONY and it’s pretty cool. The guy comes off as extremely likable and you can see why he’s able to get people to open up. He also asks thousands of people and says he has about a 50% success rate. That’s a lot of rejection to face each day. I don’t think I could do it.

I miss New York.

This is a cool site.

That’s a fair description of the SDMB if I’ve ever seen one.

Me too, only city I’d unreservedly move whole hog to if I had a chance.

Thanks for sharing HONY! What amazing pictures and stories!

Yeah, though I’d add London to my list. It’s been a while.

HONY brings online one of my favorite things about visiting NY, the people-watching. With the bonus of also getting some of the proverbial Eight Million Stories. With Overheard In New York, Midtown Lunch and others they’re fun ways to vicariously wander those streets.

Half the time I see “HONY”, I think “Heroes of New York.” Then I read the stories and I’m usually right.
