Millen, I suggest you go through all of GD, IMHO, and The Pit for the past several years, note all 3,709, 354 occurances of the word “fundie” and report all of them, too. Ought to keep you busy for a while.
It’s simply a shortened form of fundamentalists.
If you really had a problem with it, you could’ve reported the post with out telling us, or e-mailed Ivyless privately.
Such pharisaical attitudes don’t set well with us Dopers, Christian or not.
And Millen, nothing will be done. You wanna know why? Because the OP made it very clear that they were not slamming all Christians, or even all fundamentalists. They were slamming very specific “fundies”. Heck, I’ve seen worse in GD, and certainly much more vindictive stuff in the Pit. This was a good rant, and you seriously need to chill out. Stop wasting the moderators’ time on quibbles.
I don’t particularly care for the term “fundie” but I don’t take offense at it…and I was raised as an evangelical fundamentalist LOL.
Can we say “REEE VIIII VALLLL???”
LOL
At least they weren’t held in tents…but in the a/c. lol
I don’t agree, Esprix, that they aren’t Christians simply because you don’t know their hearts and neither do any of us. Christians, just like the rest of the world, can be misguided but it doesn’t mean they’re any less of a Christian…just that they’re not following what they’re supposedly preaching.
Laughing out loud - I was raised in a fundamentalist religion, and can guarantee that 99% of the church members in the church I visited don’t own a computer (not to mention a TV or radio).
Barking up the wrong tree, Millen, and if that’s all it takes to offend you…well, stay tuned.
**NoClueBoy **, what purpose would that serve? I do have a problem with it. When did it become unfashionable to point our ignorant statements on the SDMB?
Millen, I’m not criticizing, but how would it be any different if we used “Fundamentalist Christian” to denote all of those things as opposed to “Fundie”? Either way, we’d be (as you say) demeaning all fundamentalist Christians.
An addendum: Actually, we wouldn’t. I think “fundie” really means the Fundamentalist Christians who exemplify the behaviours we call “fundie.” Using fundamentalist Christian instead would actually make our “discrimination” broader in scope.
However, while “fundie” may be insulting, (and we certainly do permit insults in the Pit), it is more used as shorthand. It is, perhaps, a bit dismissive, but hardly in the category of racial or ethnic epithets. (Anyone ever see FUNDIE spray painted on a church wall?) I am a papist who has used both papist and mackeral-snapper on these boards, and I have laughed out loud at ignorant people who have attempted to use papist as an insult. Fundie is not even based on a hate phrase or a disrespectful word, being merely a contraction of the word certain conservative Christians use to identify themselves. What’s next? Are we to ban “pubbie” when referring to Republicans? “Libbie” when referring to Liberals? Is “commie” hate speech?
This whole hijack is simply silly and, I suspect, is intended more to see who will rise to strike than to actually point out a problem.
“Fundie” is just shorthand for “fundamentalist Christian.” It is not hate speech. Hate speech is attacking people for their gender, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, not for ideology. If we outlaw “fundie” then we should outlaw “Pubbie” for Republican," “Commie” for Communist. and so on.
Millen, you are a donkey-raping uncle fucker. How’s that for hate speech? (And 5 will get you 10 the moron won’t be able to identify the quote)
