Ivylass - I don’t know that they’re being chased away from their faith, but just being cautious. It’s sad to think that they have to find another church and hopefully that’s the case and not that they’ll stop going altogether. But I know I didn’t go for over 15 years and now I’m back again. I hope they’re much stronger not only for themselves but for their kids. It’s also sad when you realize the people you thought were your friends and brothers/sisters in Christ have turned on you…

Ivy, doesn’t the church have an elder board or assistant pastor that can do something? I mean…this seems ridiculous that they have to wait until the pastor gets back from vacation. Our church is very small and our elder board is the pastor and an elder lol but one of them is always available when the other isn’t.
ivylass, may I humbly suggest that in further posts about this situation you refer to your in-law’s fellow congregation members not as “fundies” but as “donkey-raping, moose-molesting, bigoted, unimaginative morons who should have their pancreases chewed out by rabid marmots, and who happen to be fundamentalist Christians.” You could abbreviate it as drmmbumwshtpcobrm,awhtbfC’s. It gets the point across, and Millen has to either take the attention-whoring act on the road or start accusing you of unfairly maligning the moose-molesters. Thus, everyone’s happy.
Oh, and in addition to the story Dr.J told about my brother, someone also tried to have him suspended for worshipping Satan on school property. He and his friends used to use the half-hour before homeroom to game rather than getting into fistfights, doing drugs, or having sex in the janitorial closets, so obviously they must be evil.
Actually, the pastor doesn’t have as much authority as you think, lol, at least in many congregations. Typically people go to the pastor w/problems but he must take them to the elder board or other such entity. He doesn’t get to make a lot of the decisions alone.
Just an fyi, it may be worth it for them to seek the advice of the head elder there.

I dunno how much this will help, but here are a couple of resources that your BIL might appreciate:
The Escapist is a Web site devoted to information about roleplaying games, designed for folks who have vague and uninformed religious objections to them. It might be worth looking through their FAQs for information to give to the moose-molesting church members; if those donkey-raping fundies keep up their assaults, the Escapist occasionally organizes letterwriting campaigns and such, and makes themselves available to any local reporters that want to do a story on the situation. (Hopefully, of course, the idiotic attempt to shut the store down won’t progress that far).
One of my favorite places online is The EN Boards, a busy messageboard devoted to Dungeons and Dragons. If your BIL posts over there about his situation, he’s bound to get some advice from other game-store owners who’ve experienced similar harrassment. What’s more, he might find some new customers in his area who would be only too happy to make his their new Friendly Local Gaming Store (FLGS).
