Again with the right hand hair part for men

Generally a right-handed man parts his hair on his own left—observer’s right.

A right hand part is a part on the person’s right hand side.

If you start looking, you’ll see a far greater majority part their hair on their left. FAR greater.

Right or left-hand, side parts lead to comb-overs.

I used to part my hair on the right. Then I listened to a RadioLab podcast that talked about hair parts and it got me thinking. I had always had a difficult time with my part. My hair would flop around and be messy and annoying. I wondered if I should change my part, so I did. My hair is much more manageable now. I wonder why I had the right hand part to begin with.

Sorry to have abandoned you, but I part on the left now.

According to that RadioLab broadcast, you may have experienced a positive social change due to the change in your part.

Did you?

That Cracked article about one part or another being viewed as more manly, etc., is full of crap. If you look at the example pictures, they’re not consistent. Sometimes “right part” means the observer’s right, and sometimes if means the parter’s right. It also said that Hilary Clinton is viewed as less feminine because she’s a left-parter, but when I did an image search, her hair is parted sometimes on the right, sometimes on the left, sometimes in the center.

I’m still not clear what “right” and “left” parts means. I’ve heard that if hair is “parted on the left”, it means the hair is separated, or parted, on the left, then flows over to the right side. And I’ve heard the opposite, too.

Nope. No one noticed.

Growing up I was always vexed by how difficult it was to keep my hair neatly combed, while at the same time acknowledging that I had a few cowlicks to contend with. I tried it on both the right and the left, and whichever way I chose would work for a while but then just get frustrating and look horrible.

As an adult I finally said screw it, I’m getting it clipped short so I don’t have to mess with it anymore. And when it was that short I finally realized my problem: I have one cowlick above my right eyebrow and when my hair’s really short, the cowlick makes it naturally point to the left. But from the cowlick, I have a natural part that goes diagonally across the top of my head, then when it gets somewhere over my left eyebrow, turns and points straight back. So the hair in behind the natural part points to the right.

I’m left with hair that goes in two distinct directions- to the left in front, and to the right farther back, with a part that doglegs diagonally across my head. It helps explain why my hair always looked messy regardless of where I parted it.

Yeah, I’m a freak.

I did look. Not seeing it.

What’d you do, a search for right hand part?

Try being out in the real world and looking around, you will find far more left parters.

Female here. I got a haircut at Vidal Sassoon in Manhattan once. The lady tried parting my hair on either side, and announced to me that I ought to do it on the left. And so I do.

I have no idea what informed her decision.

I always figured it had to do with the handedness of the person. I’m left-handed and part on the right, which is a more natural movement for me when I comb/brush my hair. I think it looks OK in the mirror, but odd when I see pictures of myself.

Yes, exactly. That is the reason why left parts are much more common. Because right-handedness is much more common.

No, don’t be stupid. I image searched for “men’s hair”, and observed that a large number of the resulting photos were of hair parted on the right.

Are you suggesting that photographs do not depict the “real world”? Interesting theory.

I naturally part my hair on the right also. It looks silly, but oh well.

Ideally, we should all part our hair like L’il Abner, whose part was always on whichever side was more facing the viewer.

Weird.

I was just thinking about hair parts this weekend and someone revived my thread.

Oh, and I’m still a right parter.

I part on the left only because it works best with a cowlick. In high school, it was very fashionable to part in the middle, so I tried that, but gave it up after a few weeks.

I have NEVER made note of which side anyone parted on. Middle I would notice on occasion.

I’m left handed and my hair naturally parts itself on the left. It would take a shit ton of petroleum jelly to keep my hair down if I tried to part on the right.
