And come to think of it why would you use your incredibly rare prototypes to pull off your hijack, if you’re incredibly wealthy, rather than just hiring some mercenaries? And leave them in the road?

Because the SHIELD transport team would eat the mercenaries for lunch. Sending out the prototype was something the SHIELD team could not (and did not) anticipate, so that gave the extraction team (of mercenaries) the opening they needed.
