“The Things We Bury”

I haven’t been able to watch this episode, or write up a recap for last week’s due to a death in the family. I can’t wait to see this episode, and hear what you guys think of it.
Solid episode with a number of story lines closed. Ward’s quality time with his brother, put to rest any thought that he might be a deep cover agent for Coulson, for me anyways. Skye’s dad is bughouse nuts, be interesting to see how his interaction with Ward goes, in the near future. They got a match on the city, but I am gonna have to watch again, to see where it was. My guess is Cambodia.
Fun episode. Both Grant and his brother were bonkers evil, and Grant’s redemption arc gets more interesting. He’s the best ally Coulson has against HYDRA.
Hunter’s bickering with Bobby is a bit contrived.
Skye’s THAT’S NOT HER NAME dad is pretty entertaining and at least a little of his insanity is understandable. Can’t wait to get to the city and see what the Diviner does.
I have a hard time believing Coulson sent Ward out to kill his brother. But I find it believable that Ward thinks he’s working off the books for Coulson. He might figure that he can kill a few enemies of Shield and Coulson will be so grateful he’ll forgive him and welcome him back on the team. Ward apparently feels he can avoid or beat the compliance program and bring down Hydra from within.
It’s also now clear that Doctor Dad is aware of Whitehall’s role in his wife’s death. Which means he joined up with Hydra to get access to Whitehall. DD was telling the truth about being willing to die but he wants to complete two missions first: reconcile with Skye and kill Whitehall.
So we’ve got a nice little triangle of betrayal going on with Whitehall, Ward, and Doctor Dad. The series is definitely on a roll right now.
I loved this episode, particularly Ward and how he disposed of his brother. I also loved the scene with Ward, Whitehall and Skye’s father. Whitehall is in a room with two men who both want to kill him and he has no idea.
I know, right? I was all, “hey, it’s Sierra!” when she showed up. It will be interesting to see whether they manage to work her character into any future episodes, as her role seemed to dead-end pretty drastically in this ep.
I will say I’m impressed with how they are managing to juggle all the myriad plot lines in a way that more or less makes sense. Let’s see, we’ve got:
Skye THAT’S NOT HER NAME and her dad
Skye’s dad vs Whitehall
Whitehall (in his former identity) and Agent Carter, back in the ‘40s
Ward vs his brother
Ward vs Skye’s dad
Ward vs Whitehall
Ward vs Coulson
Coulson vs Talbot (idle this week)
Bobbi vs Hunter (yeah, a bit contrived)
Fitz’ ongoing recovery
The Diviner, or obelisk, and just about everyone
…and I’m probably forgetting a few.
Loving this show, although trying to explain to someone who’s never seen it what makes it so enjoyable has me coming off sounding like a crackpot.
Good ep though I have to say I kind of preferred the relationship between the Wards to be a little bit more ambiguous. Senator Ward crying out “I did it because I was jealous” kind of killed that relationship a little for me. But then again, I guess it doesn’t really matter now.
It also looks like this stuff will tie into the Agent Carter series. That will be cool.
Per the internet, Kevin Feige is done with origin stories for Marvel movies. If that’s the case, then I think we’re going to get a LOT of Inhumans world building and possibly some crossover into the galactic (Kree) on the show.
Remember that Senator Ward had been the politician trying to have Shield declared a terrorist organization. He had turned around on that issue but he might have turned back. So Grant Ward could have seen killing his brother as helping Shield.
Three missions really. Kill Phil, then Whitehall, then clean up all the blood so he can make a good impression on THAT’S NOT HER NAME.
He’s got his old personality and confidence back.
I was thinking Ward. He’s certain he’s never been brainwashed. Of course he is.
Yeah, Whitehall killed DD’s wife and right after that he slaughtered some HYDRA agents and most of a village. Whitehall would have heard about that. Ward also earlier said HYDRA knew about Skye’s origins and her dad, so it makes sense Whitehall is onto DD. Whitehall is using them to find the lost city, but I doubt he’s going to turn his back to either of those two.
