re: Bobbi and Hunter Adrianne Palicki said publicly that she would have returned, but they didn’t ask.
Yeah, I read that but things can change.
Yeah, and Lucifer wasn’t going to be in the Arrowverse crossover, either.
Well, I liked it, though it was annoying they basically stole the Endgame plot, even though the series diverged from the MCU back around season 3. Nice callback having a very young Agent Hand kill John Garrett (I know, Grant killed her back in season 1, but it was still funny).
Making all the Chronicoms become friends was a bit silly. And damn it, if you’re going to kill off a character, commit! Having Daisy resurrected 30 seconds after her sacrifice was just dumb. It would have been more believable for her to have an escape plan after she killed Malick. But all that’s forgivable to get an episode of Fitz. And Deke’s impersonation of Fitz was priceless.
The car was cool.
I liked it too. I was expecting bittersweet, but compared to how the show usually rolls, this was just plain sweet, almost no bitter at all. I wouldn’t say they stole the Endgame plot. They stole the quantum realm aspect (did Fitz independently re-create Pym particles?) and Fitz’s reading of the timestream to find the only answer was a bit too on-the-nose with Dr. Strange’s
, but there was no Time Heist, which for me was the central plot to Endgame.
Agreed that it was nice to see Agent Hand kill Garrett, but I would have liked it better if it didn’t seem so unprovoked. He should have done something threatening, and then gotten shot for it, IMHO.
I believe that “dying” and being ressurected by Kora was the escape plan, though kind of a stupid one, since there was no evidence Kora could do such a thing. (Did Fitz figure that out from the timestream somehow?)
I LOVED that we finally got an explanation of the blue-suited agents from the temple. I was not expecting that.
I’m not sure how I feel about this idea of shifting between timelines. It’s novel, in that I don’t recall seeing the idea anywhere in a serious setting. (i.e. not Community) But it does kind of make a lot of the Quantum Leap shenanigans of the season moot. I do really like that they weren’t willing to abandon the “bad” timeline to its fate. That’s the SHIELD I root for.
I did love seeing Fitz again, though the total amnesia storyline for Jemma seemed a little superfluous, and robbed us of a real good and cathartic reunion hug.
So how did my predictions go…
I found the whole endings just… depressing. They all had no joy in them, and I don’t know if it was because of the actors, or the storyline.
Nice seeing the helicarrier, though.
Except that the entire series was essentially a Time Heist, to get Kora instead of the Infinity Stones.
May is kind of “raising” him, since she’s now a SHIELD instructor.
…Agent Davis LIVES!!!
I have to admit that the return of Agent Davis (as well as seeing Agent Piper in this and last weeks episode) was probably my favourite thing. It underscores the best thing about Agents of Shield for me: its the characters. It certainly isn’t the plot for me: (I can barely remember what this season was all about, let alone what happened a few years ago) but these characters: flaws in all, are some of my favourite on TV. I love how far they have all come.
But I love Agent Coulson most of all. He has always been my favourite MCU character, and seeing him with Lola, about to head out on another adventure, was the perfect ending.
So, a comment and two questions:
Nice to see emo May revert to cavalry form for one last hurrah. I liked her growth and I’m certain she’s done some fighting since becoming an empath, but a nice callback.
Q1: Simmons made a comment to Daisy about anatomy studies - it seemed portentous, but could have just been a throw-away line? Possibly to show that while Fitz has retired she is still working?
Q2: Is there some comic-book significance to Lola reconfiguring and changing color?
I liked it but it was hard to live up to expectations. Too many happy endings, and no long term consequences of anyone’s actions. But it was fun, and the humor really clicked. Nathaniel was a lousy baddy, Sybil was more interesting but poorly used, IMO.
What worked, seeing the whole plan unfold and understanding all the references. The blood test was a pregnancy test, all the pieces dropped off by Enoch throughout time. Hand killing Garrett. The inevitable arc of Kora turning to the good side - Daisy getting a family.
I would have liked better resolution to some of the relationships. Sure, Fitz and Simmons was fine, but no Philinda? Nothing interesting happened with Mack/Yo-yo or Daisy/Souza - they’re pretty much exactly as they were before the recent events.
Overall, I was satisfied. The final round table was cute, but didn’t really add anything. Still, it was nice to confirm everyone’s happy ending.
Called it!
I enjoyed this season with all the adventures in different time periods.
Enoch was treated like a dogsbody. He’s the only one that made a lasting sacrifice yet, as a chronicon, he would have been the easiest one to bring back from the dead.
So, Deke kills Malick in cold blood, Mack has a couple seconds of stern words, then it’s pretty much forgotten about. Even his son seems indifferent.
They made a mess of that time line in order to fix their own, yet they seem to be saying that timeline is still going.
How is Daisy still alive?
That’s the biggest thing I don’t get. She should be as dead as you can get, and that actually seems to have been their plan. At best there should have been a chard piece of human bone floating in space that might belong to her. Either blow her to smithereens or give her a happy ending. Don’t do both.
Mac looks like the new Nick Fury. I wouldn’t mind seeing him the movies. There should have been more head of Shield in the movies. But with having to hide Coulson and Samuel L Jackson being out things ended weird. It did give Black Widow her second best moment in the movies but she had other things to do.
So Deke is a tech genius, rockstar, head of a heroic agency - he just needs to do a little brain surgery and he’ll be Buckaroo Banzai
P.S. I loved John Garrett’s beautifully insincere smile as he tried to convince SHIELD that he was now a good guy.
They showed Kora trying to raise Jiyiang when her neck was broken, so they at least laid the groundwork for her powers having some sort of Lazarus effect. Maybe it worked for Daisy because she had been stored in the refrigerator of space? And, yeah, tissue damage from freezing, blah, blah, blah.
But I agree it would have been better story-telling to leave her dead.
She had shown earlier that she can use her Quake powers to shield herself from fire. So she can still get thrown by a blast, but basically protect herself in a shell, at least for a few moments before losing consciousness. And her being salvageable out in space is consistent with Guardians Of The Galaxy’s rules.
Apparently there were about 20 minutes of the finale cut for time, including a longer goodbye for Deke and at least some reference to Thanos/Endgame. Hopefully it will get released.
Oh man, that would be great to see.
In my personal fanfic version, I would have had Coulson go over to the bar of the speakeasy, grab some sliced lemons from the garnish drawer and scoop them into a glass to hand to Deke on the way out.
I very much enjoyed this season as you could tell the writers were just having fun. I was hoping to cry at the end and I didn’t. I’m glad that no one died (save for Deke but he doesn’t REEAALLYY count) but I was hoping for a bit more sweetness other than just “happily ever after”.
My line with SHIELD was that it would be a pretty good show, then get really stupid but then get soooooo damn good. I probably watched it more out of attrition than because I couldn’t miss an episode…but I’m really going to miss that show. I enjoyed the characters, I enjoyed the plotting and I enjoyed everyone’s relationship to everyone.
Hopefully this isn’t the end of Coulson or Daisy in the Marvel Universe
