Aging interests

hi,
I was only thinking to myself about how much more “intellectually” I continue to grow recently and as I have not had some of these interests in the past…

So what changed? I would be a school nerd had I the same interests as I do now back in the day. I’m only around 30 now, and physics, chemistry, art… lots more has come to the surface and driving me at a fairly quick pace to “recover” what I failed to take interest in before.

Is it a bio-chemical thing that’s happening? Well, sorry I couldn’t derive a more poignant question, maybe someone else can word it better/give everyone an idea of what I’m asking… thanks in advance

You started hanging out at the Straight Dope!

You’re just getting older. Tastes change when you get older. Personally I find my tastes in music, food, art have all changed or expanded.

Can’t tell you why, but I can say that it’s normal.

Well, that’s for the support RumMonkey; is there a doctor in the house? Neurologist by trade perhaps? … Any takers?

I don’t agree at all that it is normal. It might not be abnormal, but the norm is to get wrapped up in raising a family, concentrating on one’s career and following the most recent fads. Joining the SDMB might not be a sign of what the OP is inquiring about, but remaining on the SDMB certainly shows an interest in fighting ignorance. I actually followed the same path. Since I was a classic under-achiever through college, I would chalk it up to just being a “late bloomer.”

I’m another who would say it’s normal. My appreciation of such things as art, beauty, quality, food and wine has grown more and more as I’ve gotten older. In my younger years, such things were completely off my radar.

I heard once that every age has its compensations. You lose some things and gain others. I chalk it up to that.

Now in my adult years I can’t get enough of anything to do with history.
Back in grade school everything was a mish-mash of dates and countries that it never really had a frame of reference of when and where it happened and was thus uninteresting to me.

Now later in life, after traveling the world, gaining an extensive knowledge of geography, getting a sense of time (okay, civil war, that would be my granfather’s father) and building a timeline of history in my head from ancient egypt to current day, I am eager to fill this timeline with events and locations.
