I think it probably a rip-off from the Saturday Night Live sketch where guest star Dan Ackroyd (IIRC) played a character called Old Sammy, who complained that his business “Old Sammy’s Bin Ladles” had been adversely affected by the reporting on the 9/11 attacks.
njtt, note the date of the article – July 20, 2001. The SNL skit, as you said, came after September 11, 2001. If anything, SNL ripped off Slug. (Of course, it’s most likely a case of independent development, the similarity of “bin Laden” and “been ladlin’” being pretty easy to tumble upon.)
