AHunter3 Sweetie?

Those who dwell on the past never grow beyond it.

Hey, I’m not getting over, beyond or upset over anything. I just wanted to read it, that’s all.
And, like I said, we live by the rules of those who run this board. You can like it or lump it-- take your pick.
Still, that doesn’t mean I’m not entitled to my own opinion nor should I shut my mouth about it.

A-fucking-men!

B –writing short lists

Uh oh…my name in the title of a Pit thread! First time THAT’S ever happened!

Fenris writes:

Yes, that accurately summarizes my thinking regarding why I saved the Melin thread and the OpalCat vs Chi Reader thread.

I think it was an excellent idea on the part of the moderators to lock them once bumped, though. I just wanted them preserved, not brought back to life! Maybe it was a truly piss-poor idea, but they are now locked and sinking rapidly to the dim dark back pages where they belong.

But then several people said or agreed that:

??? WTF!!!

Here’s a rundown of the rest of what I rescued from death-by-pruning; please list the ones you find ugly and negative –

a) should a spouse change their name after marriage?
b) Hospital Experiences
c) Favorite Tongue Twisters [OK, trivial, so sue me]
d) Schizophrenia
e) How to Solve Homelessness
f) Dopers with Grad School Experience, help!
g) Another Stupid Physics Question
h) C++ v. Pascal
i) Bi-polar disorder
j) Female Human beauty
k) does everything include nothing?
l) Women you learned about in History
m) Straight women and guys’ bodies
n) A Slut and Proud of It!
o) ECT: Living Better electrically
p) Girls know when they’re getting lucky?
q) Things a wive won’t do?
r) Feminism
s) Freedom Vs. Security
t) What if God was one of us?
u) Does the intangeable exist?
v) What About those Hindus?

Biggirl: My comments had nothing to do with you–I was using your quote about “old wounds” to point out that the term couldn’t be applied to dropzone (as he later mentioned himself). (Like, welcome back, drop–long time no see.)

And I don’t recall suggesting you weren’t entitled to an opinion or inviting you keep your mouth shut. But then I haven’t noticed you posting about how the admins and mods are censoring you or refusing to run things your way, either–there’s a difference between that and simply disagreeing with what’s done.

AHunter3: I personally don’t see why shit like the Melin thread should be saved–as I said in my first post to this thread, it has little or nothing to do with the board as it is today and is primarily interesting for its car-wreck value. But if you get right down to it, Zotti et alreally should have known this stuff was gonna get churned up–if it wasn’t you, then it would have been somebody else. If they didn’t want that, they should have locked it beforehand. (But then sure as hell somebody would have started a thread bitching about how they were censoring the past.)

W- Holy Cow L_C - So much for short lists!
X- So much for pruning the board.
Y- Old news, is well, OLD NEWS.
Z- http://www.iDrive.com

I have avoided that particular resurrection because C++ just PISSES ME OFF!

As long as you don’t resurrect the thread about people who stomp off in a snit then are back the next day…

I wish Ed had said, “Save them to your hard drives!” instead of “Bump them!”

If you think a thread is important/part of the board’s history/interesting to read/an excellent source of information on a topic/worth preserving/whatever, fine. Save it to your own hard drives. IE 5’s got a great Save As… Web Archive feature that makes this easy.

Don’t use IE 5? You can still save a page as an html file. Save the graphics too, if you want them.

It’s not difficult, and it shows a little consideration for your fellow board patrons.

Bump them or lose them forever aren’t your only options.

The last thing you should do with an old thread-- especially if it’s an ugly one-- is resurrect it.

Of course, that’s only MHO.

Bewilderment.

[ranting]Would it kill someone to post a link?[/ranting]

Yes I know I can probably find out what all this is about if I just keep looking through all the “new” threads, but a simple little link - is it too much to ask?

So obviously I don’t know what’s going on, but I thought I’d give you my opinion anyway (hehehe - just being true to form).

I think AH3 was just trying to do what Uncle Ed asked in that thread at the top of the page. Don’t all jump on him!

I frequently find references to the past here like:

when I’ve never before seen a single post from sugarlump. It’s cos I’m a newbie. (NOTE - made-up name, made-up example) I also read things about people being each others virtual wives and lovers and I always think, well, in the past there’s obviously been a closeness and intimacy that isn’t always available now, because the place is so damn big.

For me then, hearing about the bad stuff from the past doesn’t seem that harmful, when the good is on display quite often.

Later

Well I at least I found the Opal vs Chi reader thread - and really, it’s not that bad. I think AHunter3 is a fine fellow, with a sense of responsibility to the community; lay off him you guys!

Redboss

PS dropzone - glad you came back mate. Do anything, but don’t leave.

PPS Mysterecks makes a good analogy about the car wreck and the bodies, and it hit me that he just described the reason I always check out the BBQ first - hoping for some first-rate carnage, that I can safely check out from the other side of the road. So - is that wrong?

C-Hi Diane! - Sorry, it was just sitting there waiting…

D-My apologies for the late night over familiarity.

E-For general information. As of this very day, i-Drive has ended its free storage deal - a damn shame, too

OMG!!! Are you kidding me? I have almost finished 2 weeks worth of loading 30 rolls of vacation pics! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

That’s okay, now git over here so I can lick ya!

Shit, are you kidding about iDrive? :::sob:::

AHunter3 (what happened to the first two? :))

So far, the only threads I saw were negative. I see no point in bringing up old wounds and creating new ones simply because “Some things shouldn’t be forgotten.”
No, some things SHOULD be forgotten. Maybe it’s because they wern’t worth the effort in the first place. Maybe the whole issue was settled. Maybe the person feels like an idiot for blowing up over something that doesn’t amount to anything in the long run.
Whatever the reason you had, and I’m being generous in assuming you had good intentions here, it’s wrong. Simple as that. This board isn’t the world, and pruning a few threads that contain issues settled ages ago won’t cause havoc in the long run. This board doesn’t mean shit to the world. We post here because we like the posters here, and have fun. But the outside world will do fine without ever consulting us.
I love Euty’s comment earlier, which I know is true from living in a state that never quite got over being occupied by the US Army after the Civil War. Those who live in the past never outgrow it.

My question is: Why would you want to bump this particular thread? FreakFreely mad a major meltdown in this thread and was embarassed off the boards because of it. He got caught in a web of lies/exaggerations, called on it, and admitted that he lied. It was unpleasent and ugly for everyone, and I don’t see what purpose ressurecting it would have. What would the motivation be? To teach people to beware of internet users who may not tell the truth?
Zette

Oooh yes, FreakFeeley’s meltdown. Unpleasant but, I think, a notable moment in quite possibly the maddest week I’ve ever seen on the Board – all hands to the pump as I recall. Ah ! memories…

<hijack>

Yep Diane, ah believe shoooe. Now, you stop that sobbing y’hear cos…

Plan B: http://www.Whalemail.com - Hurrah ! (but a 14 day limit if memory serves – not sure if you can open another account and transfer across as the two weeks expires)

  • You might also have a look at Yahoo: What they call ‘Briefcase’ (an option available after you sign up fer Yahoo e-mail – I think) might also work though I’ve never tried it myself. Not sure what the mega whatsit limit is there, either.

To be honest, I think you might be better off posting in GQ or MPSIMS because there are lots of ‘uploading photo’s’ type sites out there - those might work better than storage as folks can still take 'em off the screen if they do want to download them ?

</hijack>

It wasn’t unpleasant and ugly for everyone, only for those who got personally involved with either *FreakFreely himself or the situation. For some of us, though, it was pretty cool to watch. In a “rubbernecking at a car crash,” voyeuristic sort of way. If someone hasn’t bumped it already, I might.

I did a search on Wally’s name and found that he didn’t start any threads that had final replies earlier than the pruning cut-off date. None of the “infamous” Wally threads are in danger of being pruned. I’m sure that’s why you don’t see any of them being bumped (although with the anniversary of his death being in 2 days, I wouldn’t be surprised to see several of them ressurected for sentimental reasons as a tribute of sorts to him).

Jeg elsker dig, Thomas

Ah, well. The FF meltdown was locked right after it happened. So, no bumping allowed.

My apologies on generalizing your resurrections, AHunter3. The negative threads being discussed here were brought to my attention by another poster, and I wasn’t aware of all that you had resurrected (though I know that some people have a problem with the “Slut” thread, too).

The negative ones stand out more than the others you mentioned, though (I didn’t even know that half of the ones you mentioned in this thread were old threads when I saw them on the boards). Numerous people have a problem with those being brought back, when they might be best left forgotten. Especially since the incidents in them have been discussed and re-disscussed in countless other threads. If you find a thread interesting and want to save it from pruning, then that’s fine. But I don’t really see a point in saving ugliness that’s happened on the boards; just MHO, though.

Personally, I think it’s probably best for those threads to be saved. Those issues don’t come up very often any more, but every once in a blue moon, someone will bring up Melingate or such, and some poor new user makes the mistake of saying, “Huh?”

In my experience, this was generally a floodgate opener; partisans of all sides would jump into the thread in order to post their particular version of events. Eventually, some kind soul would get around to posting the actual threads referenced, and the new poster(s) could read and make a generally informed decision.
If we let those threads slip away, then we lose some of the facts of the matter. And then any further discussion of the issues becomes simply a “this is what I remember” vs. “no, I remember it happening this way”.

True, it barely comes up any more; the mention of the name Melin no longer causes the frothing it used to (and thank the Invisible Pink Unicorn for that). But still; better to light a candle and all that.

(Though, AHunter, next time you plan on popping up some bilious threads, give us mods a head’s up, 'kay? We prefer our heart attacks low-key and with little excitement. Thanks!)
