AHunter3 Sweetie?

Listen, darlin’.

If you are going to feel compelled to revive ancient threads for posterity, do you think you could choose the ones that aren’t painful for people?

Just a thought.

Euty’s already taken care of it Scotti.

I know, hon. I am just trying to save him from having to work so hard.

AHunter’s point seems to be that the threads involved are part of board history. But in point of fact they are notpart of board history–not for the large majority of posters here. Most of the people are different, the board is different–this isn’t the same place it was two years ago, or even one year ago.

Angst from long ago may be interesting, in the same sense that looking at the bodies after a major car wreck is interesting, but it’s not something that should be dragged to the top of the charts. Let 'em go, and good riddence.

I like the one about being a slut though!

While they may be part of the board’s history, I’m sure there’s a lot of other historical threads that are positive parts of the history.
Now, you could say that that’s only remembering the positive things, and that’s not all of the history. Well, it’s the same for only remembering the negative things, and from what I’ve seen, the majority (if not all) of the threads AHunter3 has been resurrecting are negative.

Plus, a lot of the history of the boards has been discussed at great lengths since these things happened. So it’s not very likely that any of those events will be forgotten. There are other, newer threads that people could look up to find out about them.
I know the intention has been stated as not wanting to open up old wounds. However, that’s what can happen when negative events, that are best left alone, aren’t left in the past.

…I dunno. I think that the good AND the bad stuff should be preserved. The “Melingate” stuff is mentioned from time to time and I’d think it less painful to point a curious newbie to an old, locked thread and say “Read this, it’ll bring you up to speed” then to have to reexplain the whole ugly situation every single time someone asks.

I was tempted to resurrect some of the Phaedrus threads for just that reason(it turns out that the couple I’d wanted to aren’t going to be pruned anyway).

Fenris

I think only the bad should be preserved:)

Cheri, my dear, is this your first Pit thread of your very own?

AHunter3, for the most part I agree with the complaints with you concentrating on the bad, but thanls for reviving the Melin thread. Ed Zotti really shows his JAGOFF stripes in that one. Apparently arbitrary and favoritistic treatment has a fairly long history here.

Fuck this board. See ya’ll at FFF or Unaboard.

Yes, baby, my very first pit thread.

But…honey, I LOVE this board, that is why I posted this. Please don’t feel that way? I don’t understand.

But yes, I will see you on the UnaBoard.

Hey, Ahunter3, if no one has posted to thread in a year, it’s dead. We can always have a new discussion on these issues if you want.

And bumping dead threads so that they will not be pruned pretty much defeats the purpose of pruning.

spooje, from Ed Zottie himself:

Pruning is by nature selective, and we’ve been asked to help in the selection process. This does, however, bring into question how to “bump” threads we’d like to save if they’ve been locked. It seems the mods are locking them as they pop up… what’ll happen the next pruning session when we’re asked to bump them?

Drop, you’re letting a year-old issue run you off now???

This is what is meant by opening up old wounds.
I, myself would like to see both the good and the bad saved. I went looking for the infamous “Flat Earth” thread about a month ago and could not find it. I found out later it was lost during the big Software Switch.

Also, I was tempted to bump FreakFreely’s meltdown, but I saw how everyone was reacting to the “bad” threads and decided to let it lie. It would be a shame to lose the thread.

There has been bad patches here at the SDMB. It seems the Mods and Admins would like to make believe these things didn’t happen. Since they are the ones who have to run this board it is their decision. Ed should have been clearer on the type of threads he wanted bumped.
Also, what is it about Wally threads? No one wants to see them bumped? This doesn’t make any sense to me. Some explain why bumping Wally’s good threads are a bad idea.

That’s not completely true. The only one’s I’ve been closing are the ones that bring up old, nasty business and have been hashed, rehashed, double hashed and corned beef hashed to the point where any further discussion is pointless and unnecessary.

I’ve spent the weekend reading some historical threads, and although I realize I’m only scatching the surface…er…links, please?

Those who do not learn from the past,
are doomed to relive it.

They wont be able to get bumped, and they’ll get deleted!!!

Oh My God!

<ahem>

Big, fucking, deal.

Oldwounds? According to the date on the OP of that thread it was posted on 8/3/1999; according to dropzone’s profile he registered on 5/25/2000. The poor guy was here for over a year before he realized he should be pissed off about something he didn’t know had happened.

Why, that’s absolutely true. And the lesson to be learned here is that if you want a messageboard run your way you’d better go start your own. The Powers That Are will run thisone as they feel right and proper, or even just as they damn well please–their board, their rules. If you can’t live with this fact, then go the hell away. Or piss off the Powers That Are, and end up going the hell away involuntarily.

Then you can go elsewhere and whine about how unfair it is that these Unspeakable Repressive Bastards insist on operating their own property the way they see fit without consulting you. But just for giggles, remember to mention that the Unspeakable Repressive Bastards have an entire forum designated for complaints about the administration. And maybe even note in passing that the threads in question here are controversial 22 months after the fact only because the Unspeakable Represive Bastards didn’t do away with them a long time ago.

Hey! It’s been nearly TWO years! And I wasn’t here for it then. However, it does demonstrate a PATTERN of problems and explains a lot of the bad feeling that continues on this board.

My first reaction was “A fish rots from the head.” However, a few hours of reflection later (no, I wasn’t drinking when I posted the previous post  ) I realize that Ed, while still a fellow who, like me, shows his natural jerkiness sometimes, is a creative type and, therefore, not a natural manager. It’s like all those computer geeks who lost billions over the past year–technical or creative abilities do not guarantee people skills. He’s a lousy manager who does not understand the value of moderators or anybody else who is willing to work hard for free. Good managers thank their Higher Power(s) every day for people who will go through that shit voluntarily. Mediocre managers understand that they are in over their heads and are happy to let the volunteers take charge.

BTW, when pruned, are the pruned threads to be stored on a CD or lost to posterity forever?
