Ailments/issues you're glad you've never had to deal with

Bee stings don’t harm me.
My wisdom teeth never hurt.
I never got tonsillitis or appendicitis.

On the other hand, my teeth are more sensitive and require double to triple doses of painkiller at the dentist, I can’t put contact lenses in and can barely stand the eyedrops portion of an eye exam without my head reflexively freaking out, and my fingertips hurt LIKE HELL when I touch most kinds of ceramic (seriously, what the hell’s up with that one?)

Like Carniverousplant, I’m not affected by poison ivy or mosquitoes. Never had a cold sore, either. But I do have a horrible nickel allergy and have a hard time with earrings and watches causing festering bubbles of itchiness.

I seem to shake off the common cold within days. I don’t know why. I run through the stages (headache, stuffy nose, chest rattling) over 3 days or so and it’s over. I don’t know what that’s about, but I’m eternally grateful. I’ve had the flu maybe 3 times in my 60+ years. No other major illnesses, except for my eyesight. Major concern.

Like others have mentioned, when I read of other folks’ medical and psychological travails, I have to just pause and have a Gratitude Moment (tm Oprah).

When I was 36 I got a headache that wouldn’t go away. It felt like I had an axe stuck through the middle of my head and icepicks in my eyes (although for feeling like I had icepicks in my eyes, I’ve had much worse pain from other stuff). So I went to the doctor, who’d been my GP for, uh, some 15 years at that time and had known me since before I grew curves.

He asked “and it’s the first time?”
“Well, yeah.”
“And you’ve come walking and your eyes are open and you’re talking to me?”
“Well, yeah… I mean, it’s uncomfortable and I’d rather not look at shiny things, but I’ve had worse.”
“You bloody lucky bitch you, I’ve had migraines since I was 15 and I have to spend them in a dark room, trying not to breathe cos it hurts! sigh Take two of this, if it doesn’t work, take two more, and if that doesn’t work give me a call.”

So while I do get migraines I’m very grateful that I can make the axe and icepicks go away by taking a Spanish-strength OTC ibuprofen (3x the strength of UK ones) when I first feel them.

I’m very grateful to never have had a broken bone. I may have had a cracked rib once, but that was a party compared with the horrible summer my cousin spent with his leg in a cast.

I’ve never had a yeast infection, which amazes many.

My brother has been hospitalized several times with kidney stones. I finally got one last year, and passed it with minimal discomfort.

Now that is lucky. I haven’t had them in a while (with me it seemed to be more associated with medications) but back when I had them they drove me crazy.

I hadn’t ever had a UTI as of two or so years ago but then I got one, and man was it annoying. Though these days it seems like whenever I feel sort of like I’m getting one, all I need to do is try to drink more water and cranberry juice and within a few days everything’s normal.

I am so thankful I have never had anything wrong with my brain. The thought of a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or brain tumor makes me more horrified than anything else I can imagine. Worse still would be a chronic serious mental illness like schizophrenia, but I am too old for that.

I’m glad I’m not delicate, super-sensitive, or easily flustered. You know the type-- they freak out at the slightest provocation, they can’t easily handle anything new or different, certain conversation topics make them irrational, they’re intimidated or weirded out by practically everything.

I work with a couple women who get completely unglued if they do anything outside their normal routine (or even do something they’ve done before, just not for a while). They get so upset that they forget how to do things they do every day. And while it’s REALLY, REALLY annoying to have to deal with them, I’d hate to be them. Life must be hell when you’re like that.

I just thought of something else …

When I was in hospital overnight after my hysterectomy, I had these massaging boots on to keep the clot monster away … and I just finished a 2 week course of neurotin to get rid of the RLS it seems to have triggered … thankfully it worked!

I got from 1980 to today without neuropathy, retinopathy and diabetes related kidney damage … and thankfully I won’t have issues with any of them [and I really do not want another run in with restless leg syndrome, the weekend I had it while waiting to get to my PCP to get it treated was seriously annoying … ]

Me too. Or migraines–I hear they’re absolutely horrific.

You can add me to the “no migraines” list. My 18YO daughter suffers with them. (And has since she was 3!). If she catches them at the first symptoms (her vision in her left eye gets ‘funky’ somehow), she can chase them away with mega-doses of ibuprofen and naproxen. But if she is asleep when they start, she wakes up with a monster clawing at the inside of her brain, and there’s nothing she can do but swallow some Darvocet, hope it stays down (her stomach is super-sensitive; everything makes her vomit), and lay there for an hour or so praying for death.

I do get headaches occasionally, but they’re the good ol’ garden-variety tension headaches or sinus headaches or something, easily managed with normal doses of OTC pain relievers.

Obviously the really bad stuff like cancer, or maggots in my eyes, or an axe though my boob.

For some reason, I really, really want to never get hemorrhoids. I’m not 100% sure exactly what they involve, and I’m sure they’re not that bad, but I’m really glad I’ve escaped them so far.

I am actually frightened to mention any of them out of some of superstition that that means I’ll come down with them.

Like saying “kidney stone” five times into a mirror.

Food allergies, and any ailment that causes food intolerances, like Celiac.

I LIKE my peanut butter, seafood, and wheat, thank you. Not all at the same time.

I’ve also never had the flu, maybe 2 yeast infections in my life, and when I do actually manage to get sick, it usually lasts about a day.

Shrimp pad thai … seafood, peanut sauce [thinned peanut butter] and noodles

Hah! True. And I do love shrimp pad thai, though I haven’t had it in forever.
Mmmm…death-inducing meals.

I’ve had exactly one, and I’m immensely grateful not to have had more. Obviously itching isn’t as a bad as pain, but if we’re measuring on the pain scale of “how much is this preventing you from being able to focus on other things”, I was at about an 8. I remember thinking to myself “Good lord, some people have these all the time? And it seems like I’ve only ever heard it referred to as a minor, albeit icky, inconvenience. THIS IS NOT A MINOR INCONVENIENCE!”

Otherwise, I’m grateful for the lack of every problem I’ve never had, including (and perhaps especially) the ones I didn’t even realize were options.

Yes, I’m very glad that I haven’t had one in years. They’re so annoying!

[minor hijack]Well, in all fairness, not all yeast infections are created equal. Some really are as bad as the one you apparently had. Some you really don’t much notice at all until you try to have sex and it freakin’ hurts. I say this from way too much experience (caused indirectly by my kidney problems. . .sucky kidneys=lots of infections=lots of antibiotics=yeast infections; these days, any time I get antibiotics, I ask for Diflucan, too!) [/minor hijack]

I have no wisdom teeth and never have. I’ve never gotten a UTI.

I’ve had one “migraine” in my entire life - my vision narrowed and I got nauseous before the headache started, but I went straight to sleep, woke up fine and never had an issue again. I was terrified, because my mom has bad migraines, and I thought (at 14) that it was the beginning of the end for me.

I’m thankful I’ve never had to be admitted to a hospital. Despite my seemingly-endless number of minor medical issues, none have ever seriously threatened me.
