This internet stuff is really something. I’m new to it – not even two years on-line. Things finally started getting interesting this week.
First, there’s a message for my husband on the Classmates site that I signed him up for. The message is “Were you in San Diego in 1962?”
Well, of course he was. He was in basic training, in the Navy, and he fell in love with Roberta from LaJolla. His girlfriend back home fell pregnant though, so it was never to be, although he’s never forgotten her.
He doesn’t want to respond to the message, but I’m a woman of the 00’s and there’s no way I’m going to let him stew and fret and wonder if the message is really from her. Tossing and turning all night, imagining she’s still cute and still blonde and still 18. Uh uh. I need my sleep.
So he decides it’s okay to respond, and since he doesn’t do the e-mail thing (he types 10 wpm on his fast days), I go to the Classmates site and type: “Roberta?” That’s all, and no, I didn’t sign it “Sailor Man’s Third Wife”. No signature on “our” response.
This was last Friday. Since then, nothing. What the hell is she doing – getting him all excited and then nothing!!! I am very ticked off on his behalf.
And then tonight, out of the blue a woman writes to me, asking if I’m so and so from such and such. Turns out I’m not, but we had very close friends in common back in the early sixties, and she’s coming home for a visit next week, and we’re gonna hook up.
These are my first experiences connecting with long-lost folks on-line. I’m not so sure it’s a totally good thing, but it sure is interesting.
