Why won’t the AKC acknowledge the Jack Russell terrier as a breed of dog?
They’re afraid it’ll take over?
The AKC probably didn’t like the sound of his master’s voice…
(Refering to the RCA/Victor logo)
They have recognized it under a slightly different name, the “Parson Russell Terrier”:

My understanding is that a large number of fanciers of the breed did not want AKC recognition in the first place, not wanting to see it screwed up by being bred for show.
Probably another group of religious terrierists. The Dept. of Homeland Security is keeping a close watch on them, I’ll bet.
This is a point to note, too. There are a lot of breed fanciers of quite a few currently non-recognized breeds who will fight valiantly against any attempt to make their breed(s) recognized by the AKC. They argue that having the AKC accept a breed standard causes both an increase in popularity and an increase in non-knowledgeable breeders, as well as an unhealthy (for the dogs) obsession with maintaining the breed standard, which basically reduces diversity within the breed and leads eventually to the kind of genetic defects that you find today in so many purebred dogs: hip dysplasia, various respiratory problems, etc.
