Will Labradoodles ever be a "purebreed"?

Will we ever see them in AKC dog shows? Would they actually be healthier than Labradors and Standard Poodles?
And Is the non-shedding fur a dominant trait? Seeing how Labradors shed alot, I wonder if a proportion of Labradoodles shed or if non shed at all.

Probably not for a hundred years or so. It will take many generations before Labradoodles “breed true” - that is, general physical and tempremental traits are consistent, and that most dogs would roughly conform to a set breed standard. Also, the AKC recognizes fewer breeds than most other legitimate kennel organizations. There are hundreds of breeds that have bred true for centuries that the AKC still doesn’t recognize.

If there’s anything in the Labradoodle’s favor, it was bred for a specific purpose – to serve as a seeing eye dog to blind people with allergies – and not just to create a “cute” vanity mutt like a Schnoode, Cockapoo, Puggle or Charley Bear.

Labradoodles aren’t always non-shedding, hypoallergic dogs. Some are, some aren’t. It’s a shot in the dark since they’re not ‘breeding true’ as elmwood noted.

One thing that really annoys me with this ‘designer dog’ craze is people paying hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars on a mutt. A dog you can get at the pound for much less. It also encourages backyard breeders. Why not breed your mini schnauzer and your poodle and get schnoodle pups you can sell for $1000 each! I mean, it’s not like there’s anything wrong with breeding two dogs you know nothing about their background or genetics. Let alone the fact that most of the people breeding these dogs aren’t too well off financially and thus can’t afford it when there’s complications with the pregnancy. I work at an emergency vet so I see this A LOT, so that’s why I’m kinda opinionated on the subject.

And also what’s REALLY gotten my panties in a bunch is the new AHA. The American HYBRID Association. The first time I saw a ‘Yorkipoo’ pup for sale that said “An AHA recognized breed!” made my blood boil. They’re trying to make it seem that these are legitimate breeds and not just glorified mutts. And…well I just realized I’m going off completely on a tangent so I’ll stop.

Yes, labradoodles are the oldest of the ‘hybrid’ breeds but I don’t think they’re going to be recognized by the AKC anytime soon. There’s some breeds that have been around for hundreds of years and still are not recognized by the AKC.

You sound like my girlfriend because I want to breed our dauchund to our akita to make a daukita

What do you get if you cross a Lhasa Apso and a Shih Tzu?

Lhasa Shih.

[And yes I know the two breeds are closely related]

My last boss paid $900 for a little rat dog that was a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Poodle. Never could find a polite sounding name for that one. I favored “Shitpoo”.

Labs shed, but at least you don’t get those big fur-ball tumbleweeds as with long-haired breeds.

As Aunt Flow said, you can get a nice mutt at the pound and save labraoodles of money compared to the cost of a designer “hybrid”.

By the way, do “hybrids” go further on a pound of kibbles?

Wasn’t there a Broadway show tune called Shipoopie?

I think it was The Music Man? But there’s definately a musical with a song and dance piece called Shipoopie. The episode of Family Guy (Patriot Games, if I remember correctly) had Peter doing a fairly accurate rendition of it at a football game.

Even if they do stabilise genetically and breed true, these breeds will never be taken seriously until they come up with some better names. “Labradoodle”? “Cockapoo”? When I first heard of them, I thought they were an Onion-style parody.

I agree, the name sounds so ridiculous. The name of the creator, place of origin or the breed’s purpose would have been a better name.

Until I read the thread, I was assuming that “labradoodles” was a made up word referencing any mixture of two breeds.

Color me less ignorant. Thanks… I think.
