It doesn’t show up in the IMDB quotes section, but I’m pretty sure Lily Tomlin called Steve Martin’s girlfriend a “sex poodle” in 1984’s All of Me. That’s the first thing I thought of when I heard the quote. (That is one of my favorite movies from the 80’s).
The cops know they are usually not admissible in court, but they often use it to rule out leads to help them direct a case. When she flunked, it was important, because it struck at her credibility. The lack of evidence ,with the lie detector detecting her lying, tells them not to waste their resources on the case.
But they don’t really judge whether you’re actually lying, just whether or not you show signs of nervousness. If you’re just a really nervous person, even if you’re not lying, you could fail one. And if when you do lie, it’s not that different from your baseline indicators, it won’t register anything.
As johnpost has said, Gore is indeed off the hook. The charges have been dropped, due to “lack of creditable evidence.”
Oddly enough, the right-wingers don’t seem to be rushing to apologize for their assumption that Gore was guilty. Now it seems that the Portland police are involved in some sort of conspiracy to protect Gore.
From what I understand, the best way to beat the test is to act just as nervous during the baseline part of the test. You want the responses to truths and lies to be the same, and pretending to be nervous is easier than pretending to be calm.
