Al Gore seems to be becoming a new man and a few political columnists have suggested his chances of being selected as the Democrats’ choice, again, might not be as surprising as one might think.
Personally, I think he’d make a damn good president. However, I just saw an interview in which he explictly said he isn’t interested. Not a quick, adamant denial, but the impression I got was more of a good-humored “Why would I do that? You’re distracting from the reason I’m here.”
Of course, such statements need to be taken with a grain of salt, but he said that he is campaigning – just not for president, but for the issue that really concerns him.
He’s definitely running. And given the Republicans’ current weaknesses, he’d certainly stand a decent chance of winning if he got the nomination again.
But I can’t see any reason the Democrats would be enthusiastic about giving him another chance. Even if you believe he won the 2000 election (I won’t argue that issue again), you have to admit, he was a HORRIBLE candidate! He had every advantage (being the successor to a popular incumbent, at a time when the nation was proosperous and at peace), and either squandered it or NEARLY squandered it (depending on your point of view).
If he won the nomination, he’d probably win nearly all the same states he won last time- but could he flip any of Bush’s to his side? It would be tough. He’s already proven that he has no appeal in the South (except, MAYBE, in Florida).
He certainly has a right to run, and COULD win… but frankly, I can think of numerous more formidable Democratic candidates. And so can most Democrats.
Not convinced Al Gore ever really wanted to be president, he can do more good promoting environmental issues than another failed run at the presidency.
