I could still have seen where Al tossed his hat as having some consequence even a few weeks ago. Look at the reception, the magnitude when either Teddy K. or Richardson decided to weigh in. But now? There’s one freakin’ candidate. Now you lend your support, Al? Against what, not voting at all?

Well, if he did it before the nom, it would pretty much signify gang warfare between him and the Clintons. Apparently, he wasn’t up for that. So… well, he had to do it sometime, and it doesn’t really matter when, as long as it’s before the convention.
I think it’s mostly significant because it drops a big namer into a state the Dems are desperate to win in November. Edwards announced his endorsement in Grand Rapids, MI and Gore makes a stop in Detroit. Voters in Michigan who maybe feel the Democrats don’t care about them, suddenly feel a little excitement at having these big namers come here.
That’s my guess anyway.
