Well, if the allmighty Tide insulted Mrs. Rod’s tits, then thank you…because I’ll take Rich Rodriguez over Nick Saban in a second!!
Either way, good to see that northern WV is influencing Alabama football

Even if he wins five national titles it IS the worst move in NCAA football history. Rather than producing millions of dollars to fund the really important things that go on at the University of Alabama (you know, research, educating our future leaders, and all that nonsense) the 'bama football program will merely produce millions of dollars to fund Saban’s next house. Next two houses, actually, since no doubt he’ll have to build a new one when he goes to another team in three years.
Eh, we needed a coach. We wanted a high-dollar coach, so we paid for him. UA has the money. I feel for schools without the football budget of ‘Bama, who are going to have to live in the New Age of Coaches’ Salaries, and I did NOT want to see Shula fired (there’s a Pit thread to that effect somewhere about,) but I’m not terribly upset about Saban.
Y’know, this isn’t really how collegiate funding works. The Athletic Department has its own budget, made up of ticket sales, donations, etc. Money spent on the football program does NOT adversely affect academic funding. At UA specifically, alumni donors have the right to donate their money to whatever department they see fit, and UA scientists compete for grant money just like anybody else. In fact, it could easily be argued that the exposure the football program brings to the school positively affects academic funding.
See you next Fall!
No, that’s my point. Traditionally, big-school athletic (or at least football) programs don’t suck in money, they produce it in excess, and the rest of the university benefits. Excess funding from football goes to the unprofitable sports, and at the truly huge football schools (like 'Bama) there’s enough left over to supplement the school’s education budget.
In the years A.S. (After Saban), every university will have to take all of that extra money back out so they can pay the coach with it.
C’mon, Man! You aren’t gonna’ duck out of this one without even firing a shot, are you? Where’s the Old School Spirit?
Fire a shot against what, exactly? College football waxes and wanes. UA will be back on or near the top again soon.
Peanuts. Mere peanuts.
Here’s an article I’ve seen published in a few places. It has Tide Football generating about 28 million dollars worth of profit last year, the vast majority of which went to non-money sports, facilities, equipment, and personnel. Of that - they kicked back about 1 million dollars to the University in the form of scholarships.
Certainly nothing to sneeze at, but I wouldn’t call it supplementing the education budget.
Consider my ignorance fought. I thought the sums involved were a lot bigger.
I still maintain that Saban isn’t worth it.
