Alias 4/11 - The Last Scene (spoilers OK)

After a whole episode of me complaining that Vaughn’s and Lauren’s relationship is “just NEVER going to change”

… it did.

THAT made it worth watching.

That and watching Jack being a badass again (OK, so he didn’t kill a guy and bring him back as a motivational tool like last month, but still…)

After Jack tells Vaughn about an incident where Irina masked an evasion with affection, Lauren does the same thing to Vaughn.
So he… searches her luggage and finds a false bottom with a wig, passport and Walther PPK 9mm with silencer (just goofin’ here, all I know is that it’s a gun). Cut to Vaughn’s face, registering as much emotion as it usually does, as we cut to … … end of episode.

Lauren’s success as a double agent, I am more and more convinced each week, is based almost entirely on dumb luck. Why on earth would she bring the wig back with her from Berlin? From the looks of what else was in the false bottom, everything other than the wig can be explained away (there are perfectly legitimate reasons why she would have weapons and false passports, although the stamps in the passports could be somewhat harder to explain away despite having set up her father as a patsy). But the wig which specifically ties her to the club in Berlin where Cypher was shot? No way to explain it away and absolutely no reaosn to bring it home with her.

I’m still very annoyed that she and her mother got away with passing off her father’s murder as suicide. IANACriminaologist but wouldn’t one of the first tests run on his body have been for gunshot residue on his hand? There wouldn’t have been any. I also doubt that the angle of the entry wound would be correct considering the sort of dash up to him the mother did before pulling the trigger, and the entry wound itself probably wouldn’t be right either (no powder burns or burns in the wrong pattern and the like). Very irritating.

I truly hope Irina isn’t The Passenger because I would be intensely annoyed by the identification of The Passenger on the basis of DNA samples since there is just no way she would have been in custody for as long as she was without a DNA sample having been taken. Even if for some bizarre reason the CIA hadn’t collected a DNA sample, running the mystery DNA against Sydney’s would tell them whether Sydney and The Passenger (if The Passenger is indeed the woman with the mystery DNA) are related.

How did the Rimbaldi disciple recognize Sydney? The picture in the manuscript from season 1 was revealed only with the application of the special liquid. Unless there’s supposed to be another picture of that woman around somewhere? If that’s the case, then it argues against Irina being The Passenger, since S1 seemed to establish that the picture was either Sydney or Irina, and there wouldn’t be any reason for the disciple to be afraid of Sydney but not Irina. Of course we know it’s not Sydney since Sydney saw the sunrise over Rimbaldi’s mountain home or whatever, but there wouldn’t be any way for the disciple to know that and there’s also been at least one ep this season where the writers seemed to forget that Sydney had done this.

Another super-secret agency within the US government? “The Trust”? Who comes up with these names? Bo-ring! Which, if Sloane is telling the truth, makes him, what, a quadruple agent at this point? I sometimes lose track… I loved how Sloane got all self-righteous about how he’s been serving his country. Sure, to make up for the 30 years of undermining it for profit, so jump down off that high horse, pal. The other big question, left unaddressed by the previews: will Jack’s anger over Sloane’s affair with Irina (another stupid plot twist; I just don’t believe someone as savvy as Irina would jeopardize her mission by dallying with Sloane) prevent him from investigating further, sending Sloane to the death house?

Otto, if you hadn’t replied, I’d think I was the only one who cared about Sydney & Co. (and was the only Alias watcher in Madison).

And thank you – I appreciate your attempt at a logical analysis of the show. You hit on some of what I was thinking.

But don’t forget the TV Writers’ Reason For Anything:

“Plot Device!”

It’s what I tell the family (Alias is about the only show we watch together) when they ask questions:

“So how come Sydney took care of an ArmedNinjaSopranoReject with one kick last week, and tonight she’s having a five-minute fight with an equally generic bad guy?”
“Plot Device – the writers had to keep her busy.”

“So how come Sydney AND Vaughn had to go to [colorful locale] when they probably could’ve gotten the same information from a phone call … or Google?”
“Plot Device – the writers had to put Syd in a skimpy outfit with weird hair, and she had to have a Poignant Moment with Vaughn.”

I could go on and on … but suspension of disbelief is a good thing to maintain for at least an hour on Sunday night (although “The Trust*” made me lose mine).

*Hmmm… maybe it was just a one-shot “show Jack’s reason for screwing Sloane” Plot Device.

Yeah, I pretty much freaked out when they said “Forensics checked out.” HUH? HOW?! I don’t think it’s too much to ask to just make it a little less far-fetched in this case. I’m willing to suspend my disbelief for the huge stuff, but the little stuff that they could have fixed should be. At least tell us how it all worked out.

Maybe Lauren or Peggy Lipton or the covenant “fixed” the forensics - I don’t know how - bought off the coroner? Doctored the report? Doctored the crime scene? They would have had to - there is no way the forensics would come back ok without a little help.

I always assumed that someone (Jack?) would find a doctored autopsy and that’s what would throw suspicion on Lauren.

But with the recent developments, I’m guessing Lauren’s in trouble without that…
