This is just nauseating. Bush is asked not to come to NY because his appearance may disrupt the rescue efforts, so Clinton decides to pop in for a look the day before Bush is scheduled to go.
From the article (italics mine):
Right, spontaneous. “I think I’ll go for a walk today!” “My oh my, what in the world happened here?!”
Now is NOT the time, okay? Maybe the fact that his wife is a NY senator had something to do with it? What about former President Bush Sr giving an address on tv?
Actually, I was surprised that Clinton didn’t make his presence felt sooner. He must’ve realized right when the tragedy occurred that Bush wasn’t up to the task. If Clinton was still in office, he would’ve immediately addressed the nation and given everyone a sense of security. Simultaneously, he would’ve tactfully pointed out the suspects and provided an immediate plan on the national front and international front. He would’ve accomplished more on the 1st day than Bush will in the next month. Now is not the time to bash Clinton. Compared to him, we currently have the equivalent of a 5-year old in the White House.
Actually we probably do know what Clinton would have done. His response could have ranged from a simple statement “deploring the cowardly attacks” (USS Cole) all the way up to retaliation bombing (US embassies in Africa). Wait, no, I guess that doesn’t tell us exactly what he would have done. Never mind.
quote:
I am no Clinton fan, but based on what I’ve read of his visit to New York, he is one classy guy.
I agree that now is not the time for partisan bashing.
I disagree that “classy” is the right word to describe that guy that used to be in the White House whose name begins with a “C”. You know, the one “after Bush”.
If he goes, he’s calculating; if he doesn’t, he’s heartless.
I suggest we all just take people’s actions and sentiments at face value for the time being. It is blindingly clear that there is bad behavior enough in this world without us actively looking for it.
Demise: You do have some idea of the amount of security based disruption, crowds, journalists, etc, generated when any current president visits somewhere, don’t you? Imagine how much more there would be in the middle of a disaster area. Ex-presidents don’t cause nearly as much fuss as current presidents.
And as a someone who’s not a big fan of either Clinton, I believe that both of them have behaved with class and dignity in this crisis. Unlike a small minority of their supporters.

Agreed (as usual), not to mention how incredibly irresponsible it would be for our Commander in Chief to visit such an insecure area right after one terrorist attack and after another aimed directly at him was unsucesssful. Bastards sympathetic to Osalami Trash Bin are still out there and until they’re caught he’s got to move prudently, no matter how badly he’d like to visit the area. He did visit the Pentagon wounded at the hospital, an area that could be made secure for him.
Obviously I do, since in the OP I said “Bush is asked not to come to NY because his appearance may disrupt the rescue efforts”.
It just struck me that Clinton was trying to upstage Bush, and the tone of the article was ecstatic in a puppy-dog way about it. I admit that my reaction was based on that single article, and was probably a knee-jerk one.
Let me clarify that I was not a big Bush supporter, but he has my full support now. If Clinton had no ulterior motives, then I’m glad he’s doing his part to help the people of NY.
I’m assuming you know that when Clinton was asked what he would do if he were still president, his reply was, “I’m not the president, I’m just a citizen who will support whatever actions the President deems necessary.”
In the Chicago Sun Times today, an article said that Clinton had been trying to get here for days from Australia. He couldn’t get a plane any better than any other schmoe. Bush intervened and got him a military flight back.
Oh, for the Bush bashers, “Fuck Off.” I didn’t vote for W., but this is not the time to snipe at the President.
(My first assault in the Pit. Pretty weenie, huh?)
Gine Tierney was an actress from the 1940’s; you’re thinking of Dwayne Johnson, the Rock’s real name.
Don’t get too mad at me, but I am disappointed in our President. Rudy Guiliani has performed the role President Bush should be doing as a wartime leader; giving information, directing efforts, reassuring the fearful, and comforting the bereaved, and above all, being visible to his people. Rudy gets mad props for his leadership in this crisis.
Thanks gobear, I actually meant Lawrence Tierney who played Joe Cabot, the guy compared to “The Rock” in Reservoir Dogs next to Steve Buscemi, Mr. Pink mentioned above. My apologies, Demise, for a comment that wandered from your thread’s intent.
I’m afraid the motives of most politicians or celebrities will be questioned when they show up at such a high profile site. If they can’t roll up their sleeves and help, if their presence is meant to do anything less that boost morale and spur the troops on, then stay the hell out.
One thing about the “recentness” of the events - the news is still a priority above what will inevitably come later on ad nauseum - everyone in Hollywood trying to get their mug on expressing their shock. That’s when my TV goes off.
