All-purpose baby, pregnancy, and parenting thread

Mine fights swaddling, but once she’s in she’s perfectly content to be my little burrito.

Right now she’s asleep on my chest while I watch Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

When we set up the baby corral while visiting a family member, we first arranged it to keep her OUT so that it would seem very exciting for her to go IN. By the time she realized she had been duped, she was used to it and fairly resigned to her fate.

I am already expressing colostrum, should I start pumping? The baby isn’t due for about 5 more weeks, but I am already leaking and I want to find a way to control it. So gross

No don’t pump! too much nipple stimulation can bring on contractions. I’m pretty sure that rubbing lanolin into my nipples started the process of labor with me. The baby was fully cooked so no biggie but I would stay away from the nips until you’re ready for baby to arrive.
if you have medium size breasts I recommend the Jonson’s breast pads to catch the leakiness, they were the only ones that didn’t fold over on themselves and make weird shapes in my bra. If you do have large breasts then it seems like the Medela ones would be good, they’re thinner than the Jonson’s ones.

Sounds like my youngest son, who’s now 2. It became commonplace in our house to yell, “Baby with a knife alert!!” so someone could take it from him.

Eventually, he grew out of it and started to appreciate the difference between toys and random objects. Until then, the only cure is a combination of baby-proofing and vigilance.

Any advice, tips, magic bullets for diaper rash? I change her at every feeding and in between if necessary. I’ve tried to make sure she’s completely dry before putting on the diaper but I’ve obviously failed at that. Poor little thing is bright red… :frowning:

Desitin on a dry, clean butt, then diaper. I also give mine a little diaper free time as often as possible. Warm room or sunbeam and lay her on a folded towel for half an hour or so to kick and goof around. Naked baby time is the highlight of her day; our best photos and smiles happen when she’s without apparel.

Something Bro and SiL did was go the “try before you buy” route and also be a lot less set on what the kid Had To Like. They bought a lot of stuff for their eldest which he didn’t like, and it was clear within days that #2 had different tastes (as an infant, he hated being unable to move his legs and liked looking at the person holding him; she went banshee if her arms were held and liked looking out into the group). There were many thingamajigs that they insisted #1 had to like when he hated them; when #2 evidently hated something, either it got moved to the “give away” pile if they already had it or didn’t get bought.

They also were a lot faster asking the relatives whether any of their kids had done something #2 had done and which they hadn’t been expecting, and how to deal with it. SiL’s Grandma kind of led the way with this: she realized very early that whenever #1 did something her own children hadn’t, it was almost sure to be something every kid in my family had done (or every one minus one, and I’m including up to second cousins in the “every kid” count).

Oof. The toddler will be two in two weeks. I tried picking her up with one arm yesterday only to sprain my shoulder for the rest of the day as a result. I think she’s pushing 40 pounds already!

My husband sprays my daughter with jock itch spray when she’s rashy… tolnaftate is the active ingredient. It used to drive me crazy because that wasn’t a labeled use, but it hasn’t hurt her and it does seem to stop the rash dead in its tracks. ETA: her pediatrician had said to use antifungal cream on the rash, so we weren’t just applying drugs willy-billy.

My little girl turned two last month and she only weighs 26.7 pounds with her clothes on :frowning: . Poor little skinny minny.

Eldest is a skinny minny. I think the toddler’s going to outweigh her very shortly. She’s always been in the lowest percentiles for height and weight. But she’s in the gifted and talented program so I figure her big giant brain makes up for her small size.

Love this! Makes me feel like I’m not crazy. For us the constant cry is “Check his mouth!”

hahaha, my son still at age 5 chews on things like a puppy. Some kids never grow out of the oral fixation stage. I blame myself for never breastfeeding. My daughter is having trouble with finger nail biting, and they both still chew on toys

I stopped breastfeeding after two weeks, and my daughter also chews on toys. She has those plush dollies from Carter’s, and bites and sucks on the tops of their heads.

One afternoon recently we were rolling around on the floor and she decided to start licking me in different places. Eventually she wanted to lick the front of my shirt and went straight for where one nipple was. I actually yelped “OH HELL NO!” and rolled over

I was going to suggest zinc oxide ointment – that’s what the docs recommended 50 years ago. Then I looked, and that’s the active ingredient in Desitin.

It worked on my kids.

Also in the old days we used vegetable oil for a dry scalp, or “cradle cap”. Don’t hear much about cradle cap these days.

I’m 20 weeks pregnant and so far I have LOST 5 pounds total. My doctor is mad (well, he gives me “the look”) and says I need to eat more. I can’t! He also said I should have ice cream with breakfast and dinner. I’m not comfortable with all of those empty calories. Any suggestions on some healthier items that will pack on the pounds? Doc wants me to gain a pound a week from now till the end.

(In case it matters, I am overweight to begin with so I’m not that upset about losing weight!)

Honestly, tell your Doc to shove it. If you can change doctors. 5 lbs is nothing, esp if you are already over weight. Stupid Doc. Your baby will get everything they need and give you the rest, so don’t fret over 5 lbs.

Yeah, I’m not really too worried. I’ve always blown up at the end of my pregnancies (this is #5) so I figure I’ll make up for it in the last few weeks. My doc is super nice, he’s just really good at “the look”. :stuck_out_tongue:

Tell doc to shove it. If it helps, tell him about the blowing up at the end.

For high calories plus nutrition I guess you can’t beat avocado.

It’s odd, my daughter (now 20 months) doesn’t seem very interested in putting things she shouldn’t in her mouth. She’s a great eater, but she doesn’t chew toys, books or anything like that. First time we took her to the beach she tried shovelling in a bit of sand, but seemed I learn that it wasn’t too tasty. She did pick up a whole coffee bean off our kitchen floor and give it a chew once, so maybe that put her off the random objects

She never had a dummy (pacifier) either. We did try giving her one but she clearly wasn’t interested. She was breast fed, if that’s relevant.
