In my day, we didn’t have ATM’s and Direct Deposit. No - we only had one bank and it was only open for one hour a year. You’d wait in line for decades and the line would degrade into a bunch of mutants and circus freaks. By the time you got to the teller window, you had been waiting for so long, you couldn’t even remember your own name.
You were born, you got in line and you died.
And that’s the way it was and we liked it !!!
You did descend from apes. Humans and chimps have a more recent common ancestor than humans+chimps and gorillas. It’s impossible for chimps and gorillas to be apes but not humans. Unless you’re using “apes” in a colloquial sense, humans are apes.
So if I wear an ape mask, I won’t get mugged by chimps and gorillas?

I believe all apes are classified in the same family of animals, which would include humans, chimps, gorillas, and orangs. In this sense, the term “ape” is not really colloquial, but just another word for “hominid,” which I think is the “official” name of animals in this family.
I think that carterba’s use of the term “colloquial” refers to the tendency of humans to refer to only the other 3 great apes as “apes,” and hold ourselves out of the classification. We tend to think of the other 3 as “apes” and ourselves as “humans,” but biologically, we are part of the same family, and are apes as well.

Not all apes are hominid. We are hominid, as were some of our predecessors, as well as some apes that didn’t make it to the present time.
But gorillas and chimpanzees and the like are not hominid. Nor were our common “ancestors.” You may have been thinking of anthropoid, which applies to apes in general.
But all are apes, yes.
If you accept the current concept of the evolutionary development of mankind, we are descended from “apes.”
