Same here. I’m a big, hairy guy whose wife describes him to strangers as “scary looking” and I like romantic comedies.
No apologies! ABBA is brilliant pop music!
I saw it last night and plan to buy the DVD. He was a howl, and Greta Gerwig was very cute. One hell of a lot more attractive than Liza Minnelli.
Arthur:What was that? Susan:* That was a French kiss.* Arthur:Was it? The French surrendered. That kiss was decidedly German.
Disco, like everything else in life, followed Sturgeon’s Law. The portion that involved August Darnell was in the 10%.
I spent the late Seventies building discos and recording studios, and while disco produced some genuine musical abominations, it also produced some excellent pop music that you could dance to.
Battlestar Galactica’s finale? Loved it. Hudson Hawk? Loved it. Waterworld? I don’t regret watching it, I may do so again some day. I don’t get the Kevin Costner hate in general, he’s been in more than a few very good movies. I also love Lynch’s Dune and I quite like John Harrison’s versions of Dune and Children of Dune as well. And I really like . . .
Highlander: Endgame.
I liked the series too, as well as the original film. I mean, c’mon, it’s Clancy Brown.
Huh, I like a lot of things mentioned in this thread too, including
Titanic (people only apologize for this because the minority naysayers are loudmouths that have given the impression that it’s a joke and very much hated. Titanic haters are like the Teabaggers of movies, trying to make everyone think a wrong-headed minority opinion is the majority opinion.)
The Last Action Hero (a very funny, very well-done satire)
The Arthur remake (To hell with the Rotten Tomatoes score, I thought it was funny and sweet; I thought Russell Brand, Helen Mirren and Greta Gerwig were all terrific; I was happy that it doesn’t contain any gross-out/toilet/humiliation humor like Bridesmaids some movies that are supposedly funny; and I don’t really give a damn if it’s a remake a “beloved” old film because I like Russell Brand more than Dudley Moore, I like Helen Mirren as much as John Gielgud, and I like Greta Gerwig a billion times more than Liza Minnelli)
Mars Attacks! (Ack indeed! This movie is so bent and so hilarious to me)
Plus The War of the Worlds remake, Sucker Punch (not more than Inception though!), Ishtar, Disco (the soundtrack to Looking For Mr. Goodbar is amazing), Joe vs. the Volcano, ABBA, Reign of Fire, the Matrix sequels and some others.
Not mentioned yet:
Angel Eyes. This movie was released at the wrong time and promoted so badly the marketing department should have all been shot. It was released at the beginning of the “J Lo” frenzy when it started to become fashionable to bash Jennifer Lopez (this was even before Ben Affleck and Gigli), and it was promoted as a “Sixth Sense”-type mystery with a twist. What it is, is a deeply moving heart-of-an-indie unusual love story about two broken people who find each other. Simple as that. It’s a beautiful-hearted film, and deserved much much better.
Tremors. I’ve never seen the sequels, but the first one was a pretty solid monster movie. And even as a kid I knew it was basically just a glorified b-flick, but it was also so much fun. And the scene where Reba McIntire and Michael Gross as the survivalists kill the monster by pumping it with a shitload of ammo was fuckin’ awesome.
I don’t much like firearms, but there was something breathtaking about how Reba handled her various guns; you could tell she wasn’t acting & had been doing it all her life.
There’s another one of us out here on the boards, too, I recently found out. My enjoyment of the film may have a little to do with the fact that I’ve never seen or heard of Tom Green before the movie, so experienced with no expectations whatsoever.
There’s never any need to apologize for ABBA. They’re great. And I don’t mean that in some sort of ironic post-modern way; they’re a solid band with a great ear for melody and pop music. I honestly don’t know many songwriters who don’t like them.
Oh no, you’re not alone. I’ve never seen the series in its entirety, though, but only choice picked parts, so maybe I just got to see the good ones. And at least it never transformed its captain and first lieutenant into giant lizards who then hooked up and produced a litter of little baby lizards.
Guilty again. In my defense, my kids rule the TV during the day. But it is rather good for a kid sitcom.
Loved it.
Despite the contrived love story, I thought it was a gripping and immersive experience. I couldn’t help but be sucked in in every way.
I’ll admit, I kinda have a thing for Kate Winslet.
For my own contribution, I offer:
**The Green Hornet **(2011)… it cracked my shit up. As funny as I find Seth Rogen, Jay Chou as Kato was awesome and totally stole every scene. Not to mention the Black Beauty (souped up '64 / '65 Chrysler Imperial) was absolutely drool-worthy.
and…
**Powder **(1995)… the story of a bullied albino kid who has the ability to manipulate electromagnetic fields. My wife and I loved this flick, not sure why it was a critical flop.
Then there’s…
I Love You to Death… Again, another one that just I just giggle or laugh out loud all the way through. Am I crazy?
