All-time Skating Rink Songs List (Warning: Bad Pop Music within)

Meco’s “Star Wars” must’ve been played a few thousand times.

Roller Derby Queen by Jim Croce?

Just don’t play Lady of Spain, or theres gonna be trouble!

From my childhood, pretty much any Boston (especially “More Than A Feeling”).

Someone’s confusing roller rinks with ice rinks & hasn’t purged the Winter Olympics opening ceremonies playlist from their memory yet.

The Tornado’s Telestar too peppy?

I ice skated a lot in the mid-to-late 1970s. Two songs that came up every single skate night, sometimes multiple times in one evening, were Show Me The Way by Peter Frampton and Baby Hold On by Eddie Money.

They used to always play “I’ve Had (The Time of My Life)”, you know, from Top Gun, when they turned down the lights and turned that disco ball on. Man, did I love that.

“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” was also popular.

Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen
and
The Locomotion by ??

were two songs that they played regularly at roller rinks where I grew up, in the eary 80s.

One was used as a couples only skate and the other there was some sort of thing going on where all the boys had to line up along one side & girls on the other and then one couple would skate, then break apart & pick more people from the lines, & so on & so on. Fun unless you were picked late. Luckily my sister would pick me if it looked like I was getting left 'til late (she was popular, I wasn’t  )

Would that be the Kylie Minogue version?

Actually, “Time of My Life” was from Dirty Dancing. “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin was the Top Gun song.

It looks like Kylie Minogue’s version came out in 1988, so that would have been too late for it to be the version they played when I was roller skating.
Good version, though.

[li]Knock on Wood[/li][li]Here I Go Again - Whitesnake[/li][/ul]

Incidentally other Whitesnake songs will forever make me remember riding the “Rock-o-Plane” at the fair, specifically “Still of the Night”

This is from my memories of ice skating rather than roller skating… I’m pretty sure it was a different kind of scene.

Anyway, Telstar by the Ventures. Even today when I (rarely) hear it, I am suddenly transported back to a skating rink in the early '70’s.

Same thing, to a lesser extent, with Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head.

Don’t forget Rapture by Blondie. And, pretty much everything by Elton John - although I specifically remember Crocodile Rock and Bennie and the Jets

Most of the other ones I remember have already been covered.

When I was a kid my first serious couples skate was to “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg.

And seriously, since the movie Xanadu was all about skating, you could use the theme song by Olivia Newton-John with ELO, or “Magic”, or “Suddenly” by Olivia with Cliff Richard.

Anything from the mid seventies. But for some reason when I think of the roller rink all I hear is Styx. Usually either “Come Sail Away” or “Lady”.

Oooh, yeah. Whitesnake and Def Leppard make me smell elephant ears and want to ride the Himalaya.

And, uh, yeah, I knew that, about Dirty Dancing. :smack:

Sweet were definite roller rink kings when I was young. I’d like to add Fox on the Run

Also, I think the Grand Funk version of Locomotion was the one I heard at the rink, though Little Eva’s version may also have been played.

Oh, yeah, how about the Jackson 5’s Rockin’ Robin and ABC?

“Somebody told me” by the Killers is on at the rink every freaking time I go these days.

Lessee, early 80’s rollerrink tunes that I remember when we used to cruise on four wheels…

I think there was a lot of Styx.
Definitely Joan Jett’s- I love Rock and Roll

Various Disco Motown leftovers- it’s hard to be specific, such a long time ago…
Oh yea, definitely-
Lipps Inc.- Funkytown
Michael Jackson - PYT and Billy Jean

I am almost positive that REO Speedwagon got played (Rollin’ with the Changes (Running Blind?), Keep on Loving You, Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore.
Pretty sure there was some Heart and Chicago. Eddie Money, too.
Sorry I can’t be more specific as to songs.

Oh Dude! I remember around '83 they had these skates I saw in a catalog that were stealth skates. They were tennis shoes that had rollers that retracted into the sole. You flipped a little switch and wham! the skates popped out and you were ready to roll!

I wanted those things so bad. I think I saved money for them but decided to buy some magic tricks and props, instead.

Ahhh, thanks for the memories.
