I heard this song the other day in a film. It had totally slipped out of my conscious memory, but when I heard it the immediate thing I thought of was the skating rink in Georgia that was the “cool” hang out when I was about 10-14 years old. (This was a long time ago for you young punks)
The songs I remember as being the very popular skate songs were:
Little Willy by Sweet Saturday Night by the Bay City Rollers The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia by Vicki Lawrence (we were in Georgia)
I don’t recall hearing these songs nearly as much outside of this venue. So what were the skating songs you grew up with? Conversely, do these cheesy 70s songs evoke any sort of memories for you?
Oh my, the first thing I though of when I saw the thread title was SKATING!
They still play these at the local skating rink, my kids sing S A T U R Day, Saturday.
Born in 1963, so I was in 8th and 9th grade in the late 70’s, when roller rinks were the hangout. I remember a LOT of Hall and Oates. “Sarah Smile” was big for the “couples skate” and “Rich Girl” was probably the definitive skate tune for my era.
I, too, find that certain songs can take me back to a specific time and feeling.
yay!! roller skating. big combs in the back pockets of our CHIC jeans, rainbow suspenders or belts, glow lights, and… BILLY SQUIER. I always associate any Billy Squier tune with roller skating.
“Stroke me, Stroke meeee SROKE!! STROKE!!!”
Not a very clean song to hear when you’re 7 but I wasnt payin much attention to the words anyway. I was all about leg-cross-over turns and squatting down to squeeze between the slow pokes. I’m still pretty mean on quads, but I can’t do roller blades to save my life.
Anyway, there was always a lot of Hall and Oates and ELO. And by the time I was in high school they had started with “Boom boom boom, let’s go back to my room.” oy.
