When first lacing up a pair of shoes, should I start the ends of the laces going up or down into the bottom set of holes? Clearly there are merits to doing it either way. Going down looks nicer and is less likely that your laces will become loose and untied- but they’re harder to tighten when tying and the laces wind up underneath your feet when you first slip your shoes on. Whereas if you go up, it is much easier to tighten laces and you don’t have to deal with pulling the laces out from underneath your feet when you first slip the shoes on. I do realize that the number of lace-holes and the diameter of the laces (as well as the diameter of said lace-holes) plays an integral role in this debate. Of course velcro makes this debate moot (but try finding a pair of business shoes in velcro). My rabbi did not have an opinion on the matter so I turn to the SDMB…
